    BMS Details

    Sorry to dredge up this old thread, but there's a lot of great info here. The schematics as drawn sort of make it look like the monitor for every set of 8 cells is independent, but I'm gathering that this is not really true. From studying the board photos, L50 for example on the far left input...

    Is this Preheating Idea Crazy?

    I believe the gen 1 heater is 5000W, so keep that in mind when thinking about how much heat you can expect out of a 200W heater. I haven't tried it on a vehicle, but I'd serious consider trying a hair dryer. They run ~1000-2000W with a built in fan for ~$15-30. Seems hard to beat. You could...

    San Francisco Recycling Yards

    Cool. Yeah, I hear you on the difficulties of using the normal search engines. I think you're getting to the right strategy though. I usually just search a variety of common items, such as doors, suspension parts, etc to get an idea of who might have other Leaf parts. Trying different items...

    San Francisco Recycling Yards

    You might check this site to get some hints on what yards nearby might have some Leafs: http://www.car-part.com/ I also check ebay and craigslist to see if anyone is selling any Leaf parts nearby. I figure if they have any Leaf parts they may have others. Rob

    AC charging - fuses and efficiency

    Bear in mind the OP appears to be in Sweden with 230V sockets. My understanding is the "L1" plug provided with the Leaf operates at 230V and up to 12A in Europe. The 12A limit comes from the EVSE cord, not what the onboard charger is capable of. Rob

    Direct solar to Charge Leaf

    Yup, its been talked about for a long time. Both in regard to solar but also vehicle to grid type demand leveling. While there have been pilot programs and studies, I'm not aware of any serious moves in this direction in the US. Perhaps Tesla's Power Wall being the closest thing so far. But...

    2011 <-> 2011 "easy" battery swap?

    Brenthasty: That's pretty slick! Maybe a bit over priced for what it is, but probably fair given the cost/risk of alternatives. Rob

    EVSE Hardwire to Plug Conversion

    If for some reason you really want 6-50 you can make your own cord using parts from HD. The plug was linked above, and they sell SOOW cord by the foot. They should have both 6 and 8 gauge 4 conductor. You can get 3 conductor, but I don't think HD has it by the foot. You might be able to find...

    EVSE Hardwire to Plug Conversion

    As I recall the load is not supposed to exceed 80% of the rating of the breaker. That's why they spec the 30A EVSE as a 40A circuit. The HD male plug linked above is rated 50A, and can be set up as 6-30 or 6-50 by rotating the blades. If the EVSE doesn't need a neutral a 6-50 outlet and plug...

    Permanent removal of rear bench seat proposal...

    FWIW on the calculator I use a reduction of 100kg (~220 lbs) in a Leaf should improve 0-60mph by ~0.5s, 200kg (~440lbs) is about 0.9s. It slows by about the same when increasing weight, so the perceived acceleration performance would be similar to driving stock w and w/o passengers adding up...

    Permanent removal of rear bench seat proposal...

    Yeah, unfortunately 3D printing something that big isn't going to be very practical yet. There might be someone online that can do it, but it will be $$. I also think trying to scan/mold to the floor is going to be difficult and a mistake. You want some foam or something in there to insulate...

    2011 <-> 2011 "easy" battery swap?

    My guess (and its only a guess) is that the dealer needs to have the battery ecu add on card for their consult system in order to do the swap. This seems to be an activation card for the feature in Consult, like the one that allows them to security / key reprogramming. Since not all dealers...

    2011 <-> 2011 "easy" battery swap?

    My understanding (not 100%) is that when a newer battery is installed at the dealership, they apply a special retrofit kit to the battery itself to make it compatible with a 2011/12 car. So in theory it should go into another 2011/12 car ok. I would talk to your local dealers and see if they...

    Total Leaf with New Battery

    There might be a market for the whole battery, but the modules inside are in pretty hot demand for non-Leaf use as well. EV converters in particular are using a lot of modules out of wrecked Leafs. There is some potential market there for other components (motor, inverter, LBC, charger, maybe...

    Goal: 3.6 - 6.6Kw Leaf Charger (aka OBC) working standalone as a programmable power supply.

    FWIW, I'm not sure the OBC has a means for directly controlling output voltage. I believe that its fundamentally a current source. The LBC monitors the battery parameters (SOC, temps, etc) and reports to VCM, which tells the OBC how much power/current to output. I'm not aware of any way for...
