I just realized that for https://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/10-least-reliable-cars/, updated Oct 19, 2017, Model X was dead last in reliability.

For the version release Oct 24, 2016 at https://web.archive.org/web/20161025075738/https://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/10-least-reliable-cars/, Model X was in the middle of the pack of the 10 least reliable cars, 5 vehicles were worst w/the Escalade being dead last.

Guess some people like Musk were so completely immersed in the suspended reality of the Movie World that they were convinced Gull Wing Doors were reliable. You can thank a well known Movie Trilogy for the X issues. ;)

WOW! This car probably saved your life and prevented any serious injuries to your Son!
I think so and come to grips with that every time I see these pictures and think about what has transpired since then. My eye is in pretty tough shape but I'm thankful I am home, walking around, communicating with family and friends, and doing other normal things ... vs being in a hospital bed ... or worse!
Scott,

I rarely read the Telsa threads, so I had no idea about your accident. So sorry to hear about your injuries and so glad that your son escaped harm. Sending you positive, healing thoughts! Hang in there, brother.

If TSLA wasn't already approaching Terminal Decline:

More fail videos like this would probably be enough to kill it...

Decline? What decline?
I drove my X down I-5 last night for about 120 miles on AutoPilot. The latest SW update was a significant improvement, handling even the winding Grapevine with ease. It was actually a lot of fun. My X just gets better and better as do all Teslas with these OTA updates.
Plus by this time next week, I expect the new 40-stall Supercharger in Kettleman City to be up and running. This place was put together really fast. Complete with a Tesla lounge area, bathrooms etc. Looked really nice and is in the perfect location for me to do a one-stop SoCal-NorCal drive in my Model 3 LR.

I see no declining nor even reclining by Tesla.

For those who love to see expensive vehicles get abused and incur $1,000s of dollars in damage, Bjorn Nyland takes his Model X for some winter off-roading sans chains: https://insideevs.com/bjorn-nyland-ruins-tesla-model-x-winter-off-roading-video/

(un?)intentionally demonstrating why a CUV isn't an SUV or Jeep.
Even more horrifying than watching an X floundering when driven off-pavement, is watching a well-cared-for 2016 Model X depreciate while driven on-pavement...

Winning bid:US $90,101.00

Seems like pretty typical depreciation for a luxury vehicle. Even much less expensive cars lose about 11% of their value as soon as they're driven off the lot, and 25% after one year. I see luxury vehicles used in businesses are allowed to depreciate them 35% for the first year, and this is about 37.8%, so seems in line. If you're worried about depreciation, don't buy a new car.

Just became aware that Edmunds had a wrap-up on their long-term '16 Model X.

https://www.edmunds.com/tesla/model-x/2016/long-term-road-test/wrap-up.html

Not surprisingly, under Maintenance & Repairs:
We learned something about Tesla maintenance from owning a Model S: There can be a lot of it. The general theme will feel familiar. During 20 months of ownership, our Model X went in for service seven times, spent 19 days out of commission, and had a total of 32 issues addressed.
The laundry list is there. They put on just shy of 25K miles.

Yikes! I kept thinking I was at the end of the list, but there was more scrolling to go. My reinforced opinion on FWD and electronic everything: Not just no, but hell, no! Of course, much of the list is due to Tesla QC issues, but there's enough left over to make me stay away if I were otherwise inclined to buy such a vehicle.

Yikes indeed. That is a long list of issues after only 20 months. QC has a long ways to go at Tesla it seems.
For my own list; after 7 months my tally of problems is... one.
The drivers seat (Ultra White), had a small opening in the seam at the back of the seat. I think it was there when I picked up the car. Took it to Tesla on a Saturday morning without an appt. They checked it and said "we're ordering a new seat".
Two weeks later, I had a new driver's seat.

Perhaps I've been lucky but this 2017 X90D has been great so far. Done a couple of snow trips, fantastic grip and handling (with winter tires). Enjoyed the cold-weather package; never thought about a heated steering wheel but it really does help warm you up. It is an energy pig, as most SUVs seem to be. 220 miles of range is realistic.
For my type of use, there's no other SUV I'd rather have, except a 100D.

Quality is improving as bugs get worked out? While folks battle to be at the front of the line for new Tesla models does a more rewarding experience lie at the end of the line?

I've been very happy with my 100D (June 2017) build which replaced my P90D (Feb 2016). Everything is working well (FWD, homelink, autopilot 2). The AP2 functionality seems to work as well or better than the AP1 that I had. There were some common places I have driven both and the AP2 handled them better.

Model X Crash on 101

Tesla catches fire, driver seriously injured in Highway 101 crash...
https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/model-x-crash-on-101.111505/

Dramatic X crash and fire in the Bay area, multiple news links and photos at the thread above.

Comments indicate it fragmented on impact, that the front end did not melt in the fire.

The driver died at Stanford med center. First two photos (the rest are just Tesla stock fluff) here show the aftermath, including a front shot of the interior of the car (the rest is melted): https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/arti...nt-3-car-crash-on-12777162.php#photo-15279969
So, as the speculation on TMC asks, was the car on AP or not? That's the sort of gore point that might confuse AP - see the photo here: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/model-x-crash-on-us-101-mountain-view-ca.111505/page-4

^^^
https://twitter.com/Anoushah_Rasta/status/977265870215901184 has a video w/a closeup of the front of the Model X.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiQdSaRDzvc

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2018/03/23/highway-101-85-mountain-view-fiery-crash/ has a pointer to another video at https://www.facebook.com/CBSSanFrancisco/videos/10155621210384436/.

I don't go thru that area much any more, but yeah, the splits there can be a bit confusing. I usually would take 85 south or 101 south and not the carpool portion.

The first raw video at https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Sig-Alert-Issued-After-Accident-Causes-Car-Fire-on-Hwy-101-477762763.html (about 1/3 of the way down) shows the Model X with only a small fire (which later grew much larger).

OTOH, that's the heart of Silicon Valley, so if any area should have digital maps that are up to date, as well as lots of A/P experience with that merge it should be this one. I'm leaning towards a late manual merge such as the one shown on the TMC page I linked to^^^ as the cause, but we'll just have to see.

This was a horrific crash and a tragedy for the family of the man who died.
I think the AP issue is irrelevant. AP always comes on with a "keep both hands on wheel... be ready to take control at any time.." graphic. In my experience with AP (even the newest release) I would never let it navigate that interchange except perhaps as an active participant in a test during minimal traffic.

I'm more convinced, based on other TMC posts, that the gore-point barrier hardware was not in place and that is what made this crash so deadly. Based on crash test videos of the sort of barrier at this location, I find it incredible that the Model X would have sustained such damage if a working barrier was present. Anecdotally, from other recent videos posted and many Google maps excerpts, this location seems to have frequent impacts and is often awaiting barrier repair. That's my speculation. Sad event, regardless.
