In addition, Dana engineers had extensive experience with this particular application because the diesel-powered version of this vehicle also features Spicer drivetrain components.

While battery-electric trucks can operate efficiently in urban areas, hydrogen technology is one of the options for zero-emission logistics over longer distances. Heavy-duty distribution vehicles with a fuel cell range extender—while not yet commercially available in the EU—are demonstrated in H2-Share and their potential is assessed in this project by TNO.

H2-Share will join forces with four front-runner NWE regions in three member states (BE, NL, DE). The 27 -ton rigid truck run on hydrogen will be built by VDL and the mobile H2 refueler will be built by Wystrach GmbH. The goal is to test the truck at six locations in Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and France.

Based upon the demo’s and strong cooperation with sector-related associations, a joint roadmap for zero-emission heavy-duty trucks in NWE will be developed, along with cooperation from other EU regions. The project aims to realize knowledge sharing between regions and stimulate technology and market development in NWE.

The project will run until September 2020 and will be coordinated by WaterstofNet. . . .


Workhorse electric delivery vans achieve 40-75MPGe in real-world pilot testing

Workhorse Group Inc. reported that in real-world pilot-testing,the N-GEN all-electric delivery van has demonstrated a fuel efficiency, as expressed in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), that averages 40 MPGe for its 450 cubic foot electric van, and 75MPGe for its 200 cubic foot electric van, representing up to a 500% improvement versus conventional gasoline-fueled delivery vans.

More than 100,000 packages have been delivered by Workhorse-employed drivers and delivery associates, offering insights to optimize the N-GEN production vehicle design for last-mile delivery workers. . . .

The N-GEN vans feature fast charging capabilities and achieve 100 miles all electric range. All-wheel drive and built-in Workhorse telematics system, which tracks all parameters in real time to optimize performance and efficiency, are standard. Design options will include collision avoidance system, automatic braking, lane centering warning and optional patented HorseFly unmanned package delivery drone.

. . . The new truck, known internally as “Beta,” expands on the capabilities of Toyota’s first Project Portal test vehicle by increasing the estimated range to more than 300 miles per fill. The truck also enhances versatility and maneuverability with the addition of a sleeper cab and a novel fuel cabinet combination that further increases cab space without increasing wheelbase.

Since it first began operation in April 2017, the Project Portal “Alpha” truck has logged nearly 10,000 miles of testing and real-world drayage operations in and around the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles while emitting nothing but water vapor. The Beta vehicle will begin drayage operations in the fall, increasing the Ports’ zero-emission trucking capacity and further reducing the environmental impact of drayage operations.

Project Portal 2.0 builds on the lessons learned from the launch of the Alpha vehicle in 2017. The first heavy-duty truck was the result of a true skunkworks effort within Toyota that moved from initial concept to a fully-capable drayage truck driving silently out of a Michigan garage in just over a year. Engineers and technicians worked long hours to reconfigure the wire harnesses, electronics and other components of two off-the-lot Mirai fuel cell electric cars to create one of the world’s first OEM-built zero-emission heavy trucks.

With a gross combined weight capacity of 80,000 lbs. and a driving range of more than 200 miles per fill, the 670-plus horsepower Alpha truck produces 1325 pound-feet (1796 N·m) of torque from two Mirai fuel cell stacks and a 12kWh battery. Project Portal Beta maintains these torque and horsepower numbers while also extending the range of the vehicle and pushing forward on other key performance metrics.

UPS to test new Thor medium-duty electric truck

UPS announced a collaboration with Thor Trucks, Inc. (earlier post) to develop and to test a fully-electric class 6 delivery truck in Los Angeles, Calif. The truck is expected to be ready for deployment later this year.

The Thor medium-duty electric delivery truck will have a driving range of approximately 100 miles powered by a Thor-designed and built battery that will be lightweight, durable and allow long-range driving distances.

For six months, UPS will test the medium-duty electric delivery truck as part of its fleet. Testing will include off-road evaluation to address durability, battery capacity, technical integration, engineering and any items found during on-road testing. Depending on the success of the deployment, UPS may make additional purchases of the electric vehicle. . . .

The first serially-produced container transporter powered by Li-ion batteries was delivered to HHLA (Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG) Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). The lithium-ion automated guided vehicle (AGV), weighing 26.5 tonnes, was brought by heavy transport on 1 August. Diesel-powered AGV at CTA will be replaced step-by-step. A pilot project to test a lithium-ion AGV prototype coupled with an automatic electric charging station has been under way at CTA since autumn 2016. HHLA ordered 25 Konecranes Gottwald Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) with lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery drives for for CTA in the first quarter of 2017. From 1 August 2018, the serially-produced lithium-ion AGVs are being delivered to Hamburg weekly from the Konecranes yard in Düsseldorf.

Konecranes Gottwald automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are unmanned, software-controlled container transporters which provide an efficient link between the harbor quay and the stackyard in large container terminals.

They are initially replacing the first generation of diesel-powered vehicles at CTA, followed by the second-generation of diesel-electric AGVs and finally phasing out the lead-acid battery-powered vehicles. The entire switchover of almost 100 AGVs should be completed by the end of 2022. . . .

Through the usage of the new AGV generation, HHLA will reduce its yearly emissions of CO2 and nitric oxide by approximately 15,550 tonnes and 118 tonnes, respectively. However, emissions at CTA will decrease substantially in the coming weeks as the first machines to be put out of service will be the diesel AGVs.

Nikola Motor’s zero-emission trucks—which will be able to travel between 500 and 1,200 miles and be refilled within 20 minutes—will be part of fleets beginning in 2020 and in full production by 2021. To date, the company has nearly eleven billion dollars in pre-order reservations.

y 2028, Nikola is planning on having more than 700 hydrogen stations across the USA and Canada. The first 14 stations will be up and running by 2021.
Between the deal with Anheiser-Busch and this, Nikola is looking more and more like they might be a real company rather than a Ponzi scheme.

The Energy Commission’s Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program (ARFVTP) awarded nearly $6 million to the San Diego Port Tenants Association to demonstrate 10 vehicles and other sustainable freight technologies in and around the port. The ARFVTP, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, supports development and deployment of advanced transportation and fuel technologies throughout California.

Dole Fresh Fruit, Marine Group Boat Works, Pasha Automotive Group, TerminaLift, and Continental Maritime will get hands-on experience with the two BYD battery-powered electric cargo trucks. The aim is to show businesses the feasibility of using zero-emission vehicles in port operations, encouraging their adoption.

The tractors are equipped with a 217 kWh battery pack powering a 180 kW motor which delivers 1,106 lb-ft (1,500 N·m) of torque for 10+ hours of operation.

Additional vehicles funded by the Energy Commission grant will be delivered later this year. These vehicles include electric yard tractors by BYD and forklifts and semi-trucks modified with battery-electric propulsion systems by Efficient Drivetrains, Inc. and Transportation Power, Inc. . . .

. . . As it turns out, Ambev, a Brazilian brewing company owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, plans to add 1,600 EV trucks by 2023. The vehicles would be purchased by around 20 logistics companies that are contracted to distribute Ambev’s products.

Anheuser-Busch in the U.S. is also considering a purchase of 40 Tesla Semi and up to 800 Nikola One.

The talks between Ambev and Volkswagen had long preceded this, but it seems that the decision was at least accelerated/triggered by the latest policy, introduced by the government that applies a new fixed minimum freight fare for diesel truckers. EVs are exempt, so logistics companies are inquiring Volkswagen, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and others to provide electric trucks. . . .

The vehicles will feature a range of amenities for passengers, including air conditioning, a sophisticated passenger information system or seats made of top-quality, anti-static material with anti-graffiti properties. The ordered Trollino with a 2-2-2-2 door arrangement will be equipped with a Solaris touch panel. Moreover, the driver will benefit from a set of indoor and outdoor cameras, including one for monitoring the pantograph.

Last year, Cluj Napoca authorities ordered a total of 23 emission free Solaris Urbino 12 electric. 11 of those are already in use; the remaining 12 are to be supplied by the end of this year. As part of the contractual option the producer may supply another 18 of these vehicles. . . .

As the host city of the 24th Winter Olympic Games, Zhangjiakou aims to create a green winter Olympics and is committed to taking the lead in applying leading-edge hydrogen fuel cell buses. The delivered vehicles are the 3rd-generation hydrogen fuel cell bus independently developed by Yutong.

The vehicle features a 500-kilometer (311-mile) driving range and only 10~15 min hydrogen refueling time. The vehicle can achieve startup at the temperature as low as -30 °C, which is well adapted to cold weather.

As of July this year, the reliability verification mileage for Yutong hydrogen fuel cell buses has exceeded 90,000 kilometers, effectively verifying the reliability of fuel cell system, hydrogen system, DC/DC voltage converters and integrated vehicle control. . . .

The buses are equipped with four hydrogen leakage sensors. When the hydrogen concentration reaches 1.6%, the alarm is triggered. When it reaches 2%, the hydrogen supply will be cut off, and the alarm on the dashboard will alert the driver to take corresponding measures as soon as possible. . . .

While the Renault Kangoo Z.E. has been the king of the segment for years (2011-2015 and 2017), since its introduction, the new German StreetScooter Work becomes a new shining star – especially in Germany.

The Nissan e-NV200 (top LCV in 2016) currently seems to be constrained by the lack of supply of 40 kWh batteries, shared with the Nissan LEAF.

Winnebago Reveals Electric Healthcare RV: Range Over 100 Miles

Samsung’s NeuroLogica, Winnebago Industries and Motiv Power Systems jointly developed an all-electric Mobile Healthcare Vehicle – Mobile Lung Unit (eMLU), available on display in San Francisco, at both CALSTART’s Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero Workshop on September 11th and the Global Climate Action Summit September 12-14.

The eMLU is based on the Ford F-53 and can go 85-125 miles (136-200 km) on a single charge, which sounds like it’s more than enough to move from one site to another. On-board equipment includes the world’s first portable, full-body, 32-slice CT scanner.

According to the press release, the eMLU will bring $150,000–$200,000 in combined diesel fuel and maintenance savings over the long-term.

Royal Mail Readies Electric Vans For Deliveries: Hundreds On Road Soon

. . . The battery-powered red vans have been developed by Banbury-based Arrival Electric Vehicles and have been rolled out in London ahead of a full introduction nationwide. Nine of the vehicles, operating at weights of up to 7.5 tonnes, will be running in the capital, distributing post from Royal Mail’s central London depot.

The Arrival vehicles won’t be the only electric vans in Royal Mail’s fleet. 100 more Peugeot electric vans have also been ordered by Royal Mail, and will be put into service at 18 depots in Belfast, Edinburgh, Essex and Kent. Other areas will get the vans later on as fleet replacement schemes dictate, taking the place of vehicles in Royal Mail’s 49,000-strong fleet at the end of their working life.

“We will be putting them through their paces over the next several months to see how they cope with the mail collection demands from our larger sites,” said Paul Gatti, Royal Mail Fleet’s managing director, adding that the company was “delighted” with the new collaboration with Arrival.

“Our research has shown that electric vans are a good operational fit with our business,” added Paul Gatti. “It also means we are on the front foot for future changes in emissions legislation. . . .”

Royal Mail’s introduction of electric vans follows a trial for similar vehicles by UPS in London.

UPS also worked with Arrival on its fleet, with the partnership dating all the way back to 2016. Both parties have co-developed a number of prototypes with 35 state-of-the-art vehicles taking to the streets of London and Paris this year in an initial scheme to see how they work in a delivery environment.

The vans, which their manufacturer calls ‘lightweight composite vehicles’, will have a range of more than 150 miles, making them better than any other existing comparable options for a company such as UPS. Arrival says it is ‘the first commercial vehicle manufacturer in Europe to provide purpose-built electric delivery vehicles to UPS’s specifications’.

“European postal providers, starting with DHL in Germany, have been taking this approach for a while now,” said Ananth Srinivasan, a mobility expert with research consultancy Frost & Sullivan.

Srinivasan added that businesses in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain had the potential to convert significant chunks of their fleets to electric vehicles in the coming years.

Alstom held a world premiere event on Sunday celebrating its Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell train (earlier post) rolling into service in Lower Saxony, Germany. From today onwards, two such trains will enter commercial service according to a fixed timetable.

Travellers in the Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser (EVB) network can look forward to a world-first journey on the low-noise, zero-emission trains that reach up to 140 km/h (87 mph). On behalf of Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG), the Coradia iLint trains will be operated on nearly 100km of line running between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude, replacing EVB’s existing diesel fleet.

The new trains will be fueled at a mobile hydrogen filling station. The gaseous hydrogen will be pumped into the trains from a 40-foot-high steel container next to the tracks at Bremervörde station. With one tank, they can run throughout the network the whole day, with a total range of 1000 km (621 miles). A stationary filling station on EVB premises is scheduled to go into operation in 2021, when Alstom will deliver a further 14 Coradia iLint trains to LNVG. . . .

Lower Saxony’s Ministry of Economy and Transport has supported LNVG’s purchase of another 14 hydrogen trains with more than €81 million (US$94 million). . . .

The German federal government has actively supported the development and testing of the new drive technology in Lower Saxony by providing funds from the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. . . .

In January 2019, car2go will launch in Paris with a fully electric fleet of 400 smart EQ fortwo cars. The French capital is the 15th car2go location in Europe, the 26th worldwide and the fourth city—after Amsterdam, Stuttgart and Madrid—in which car2go operates a fully electric fleet of cars.

During the course of 2019, car2go expects to add several hundred more cars to the Paris fleet. . . .

To date, the more than 400,000 customers at the electric fleet locations have driven over 79 million zero-local-emission kilometers—equating to 1,972 times around the world. . . .

CARB awards BNSF Railway $22.6M for clean technology pilot program; battery-electric locomotive

BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) and the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District were preliminarily awarded a $22.6 million Zero and Near Zero Emission Freight Facilities grant from the California Air Resource Board to pilot several emissions reducing technologies in and around railyards. BNSF will collaborate with various industry partners to test the feasibility of these technologies. . . .

As part of the project, BNSF will partner with GE Transportation on a battery-electric locomotive that will be paired with diesel locomotives to power a freight train traveling from Stockton to Barstow.

GE Transportation will develop an all battery-electric locomotive to validate the technology’s operational benefits and growth potential in the freight rail industry.

The company will design and build an AC Evolution Series locomotive featuring an overall energy-management system, including onboard energy storage, which coupled with advanced system-optimization controls will improve performance. This battery-electric locomotive will generate 2,400 kilowatt-hours of power and could potentially reduce a freight train’s total fuel consumption by at least 10 to 15 percent. . . .

In addition, two hybrid rubber-tire gantry cranes from Mi-Jack will be piloted; one at the Stockton Intermodal Facility and another at the San Bernardino Intermodal Facility. The hybrid cranes, when compared to their diesel counterparts, have the ability to reduce emissions by 70%. A Taylor all-electric side loader will also be piloted at the San Bernardino Intermodal Facility. Finally, BNSF will partner with SH&H, a drayage truck provider, to demonstrate a BYD all-electric drayage truck in San Bernardino.

The equipment will be manufactured in 2019 and deployed in 2020. The grant will cover approximately half the cost of what is estimated to be a $45 million project. The remaining amount will be funded by BNSF and the other corporate partners. . . .

Recently, at the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hanover, Germany, Ford presented its Transit Custom plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model for the first time. Featuring an advanced hybrid powertrain system, the Transit Custom PHEV targets a zero-emission driving range of 50 kilometers (31 miles) and uses the multi-award-winning Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost petrol engine as a range extender for total range exceeding 500 kilometres (310 miles).

. . . The NGEN-1000’s curb weight is 4,000lbs—less than one-half of what a traditional diesel step-van weighs—while offering the same cubic footage of storage, 1,000 cubic feet.

Workhorse believes this weight reduction, coupled with the 100-mile range, will have cost-savings implications that will make the EV alternative to traditional fleet delivery vehicles all the more appealing. The NGEN will be available in four cargo sizes for customers: 250, 450, 700 and 1,000 cubic feet.

The lightweight design allows for 100-mile range, with a smaller battery pack than previous designs, thereby reducing the cost of the vehicle significantly. The smaller battery pack also reduces the cost of the charging infrastructure for the customer. . . .
