Hmm. Does anyone else see a similarity of that logo with the design circulated here a long time ago by http://evbadges.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ? I smell a copyright infringement complaint... (Unless they borrowed it from someone else too!)

Are Tesla salesman told me that the A and B class EVs have a Tesla drivetrain.
From the linked article:
Developed in partnership with Tesla, the near-to-production-ready MPV presages the B-class Electric Drive to be sold in selected markets from early 2014 as part of broad based zero emission model offensive set to be launched by Mercedes-Benz in Paris.

The Tesla powered Toyota and Mercedes models will remain very low production models. The contracts with Tesla are not long-term contracts-- if anyone is curious, go to the SEC website and read Tesla's SEC disclosure forms. In a sense, it really seems like everyone except Nissan is just dabbling in EV's-- and maybe they are right to do so, it may be wise to hold large production off until better technology is available.

From SEC filing by Tesla: "We completed our production deliveries to supply Daimler with battery packs and chargers for the Daimler Smart fortwo and A-Class EV programs as of December 31, 2011. Although we have continued to deliver a small number of battery packs to Daimler to meet their service requirements, we expect further powertrain component sales under these programs to Daimler to be limited."

The ICE version of this car is pretty neat. I'd buy it as an EV certainly.

Mercedes claims the 28-kWh pack is good for 115 miles of range

If the other article on wired is right about the mid-price 30k range Nissan will have hard time selling its higher priced Leaf models.

is this another LA4 estimate?

Good question ... the comment on range reads:

"Emission-free even over longer distances

The maximum speed is electronically limited to 100 mph (160 km/h) – in the interests of operating range. The range is around 115 miles (200 kilometers), according to the respective driving cycle. This means that in addition to emission-free urban driving and short-range trips, longer journeys can also be undertaken without any problems, such as the distances covered on a daily basis by commuters."

But they don't go any further on where it was calculated, would think that as it will at first be introduced in the U.S. and Europe later that they did some testing in the states but as they don't specify if this was either an LA4 or NEDC (New European Drive Cycle) mileage test one can only guess.

"28 kWh lithium-ion battery"

This pretty much tells us what we need to know. Range will be slightly better than a LEAF. I would guess 100 mi EPA, and maybe 80 for 65-70mph freeway driving, which to me is the important number when I care about range, since I'm not taking a 100-mile trip on surface streets.

Depends on a few more things though, it's not so cu t& dry. Weights of the vehicles, aerodynamics, drive unit efficiency etc. More capacity means it SHOULD be better, all other things being equal. But we don't know that they are indeed equal. With Tesla helping one hopes they would provide a leg up, but again the Germans like to do things their way, and they are not trying to ape Nissan. They have a different business model. So we just have to wait and see real life experiences with it.

Mercedes should do the same with their A-class as well. Nice car.

That range says city miles. We're looking at 80 freeway miles. What a waste of time, Mercedes...

At this stage of the game anything short of 35-45 kw battery won't do. I am tired of 73 mile range of my Leaf. It's way too bothersome, particularly in winter when it drops down to 68 or so. It's like iMiev.

I'm not sure the majority of Leaf owners will necessarily agree with this statement, myself including. Yes, more range would be welcome but I'm managing just fine with my 50-70 mile daily commute. I do live in a warm climate though. If anything I'd complain about missing QC option.

Is the size about the same as a Leaf, smaller, slightly larger or larger?

Tia,

Ian B

They are close overall with the MBZ being 3.4 inches shorter in length but rear leg room can be much more in the B-class but may not apply to the electric due to the battery pack, the gas version is already sold in Canada, both are 5-door hatch backs, will be curious as to overall fit & finish as well as MBZ typical approach to option packages (if any) which can drive the price way up, the production version as already mentioned was at the NY Auto Show:

B-Class (applies to the gas version so may be a little different):

i like it from the pictures. but unlike with the LEAF, where i committed sight-unseen, i have an EV and can wait for the reality.

though my LEAF does my 50-mile daily commute with ease, i would appreciate the greater range, even if just 10 miles, for trips to other SoCal venues.
