Didn't see a thread on the PP-PHEV so started this one... did anyone else see that commercial for it at halftime? The guy driving along the road with the power lines buzzing. Couldn't find it on youtube, it should show up soon. Anyway I thought it was pretty cool, even if they have only sold like 50 of the cars, these messages are starting to get out from sources recognized by the masses. I really think we're at the tipping point.

Found the video. A few observations:
- that sure is a lot of exhaust noise for an EV
- the green brake calipers are cool
- note the obligatory wind turbines in the landscape
- EV owners always live in contemporary homes and have tidy garages

Some of those scenes look to have been filmed on Las Virgenes Rd./Malibu Canyon near the tunnel. I used Google maps to jog my memory and "street view" confirms there are utility poles/electric transmission lines strung overhead along that stretch as seen in the ad.

Would have to bet most of this ad was shot in California. Who knows what CGI wizardry may have been employed to enhance the imagery, though.

Thanks, we at Porsche feel good about the Panamera e-hybrid. It has a larger battery and much more powerful motor than last the last gen (95hp/229 lb-ft) allowing this plug-in to travel electric only for about 22 miles at speeds of 80 Mph. It should be in showrooms first week of November.

So Gibber, are you with a dealer or are you with volkswagen/porsche?

22 mile AER isn't anything to write home about, but progress is progress, and while that nasty old internal combustion engine won't win over many in these hallowed halls, anyone out there promoting a car with a plug is ok in my book. Plus any time someone grumbles about the back seat in the Volt only holding two people I point out that if it's good enough for the panamera it's good enough for me

Hello LTL,
I'm a Porsche Service Advisor | E-Mobility Specialist (dealer) Thats the idea, baby steps right now. A lot of our Panamera owners drive 10-15 miles in a typical day so this will allow them to run weekly errands at zero emission so they can feel better about unleashing the full 416 Hp on the weekend. Look for Cayenne and upcoming Macan to both be offered with the same package.

Looking forward to seeing these in the carpool lane! (as long as it's not pushing me out of the way!)

California qualification for HOV access is based on total battery capacity, the 9.4kWh pack in the Panamera won't qualify for the stickers so no worries about one in your rear view mirror...... yet.

Do they have a big speaker to make the engine noise when running on electric? I'm wondering how this will play with Porsche afficianados.

LOL, no LT there is no Gimmickry, just Porsche Intelligent Performance finding ways to improve everyday useability without compromising the driving experience.

Do you REALLY think there are many Porsche owners who care about the environment to that extent? That is NOT why they buy a Porsche!
My neighbor across the street has a Cayenne Turbo S, a Hummer H2, and a F350 truck... 'Nuff said!

Good morning Tom,

I get your point, it is valid. That said, Just because someone can afford a premium car does not mean they don't care. The important thing to take away from this is that even if we assumed (incorrectly) that none of our clients cared, Porsche does care. We are making great strides to improve efficiency and reduce emissions across our model range. Some ask why the worlds leader in premium sports cars should even bother, after all our sales account for only 0.2% of the total cars sold in the United States each year. We do care because we are looked at as the benchmark of performance and engineering in the industry, so if we can prove our vehicles are cleaner and greener while maintaining our performance lead then no other auto manufacturer has an excuse for not following our example. And that will make things better for all of us.

I applaud that laudable goal but it may also be that there is the thought that some of the technology will also filter down to the more pedestrian vehicles of parent VW and Audi... Perhaps even filter UP from them...

FYI, I owned a couple of 911s over the years myself... Great cars!

Does VWAG get CARB credits for the plugin Panamera?

The reason I think this car is interesting is it provides a sneaky way in to electrification of buyers who wouldn't have touched it otherwise. More people standing around at cocktail parties talking about it... then the discussion of how far everyone's car goes AER, and the Porsche guy realizes the Volt guy has him beat... then the 2016 Panamera comes out with 50 mile AER, the guy with the bottomless pockets upgrades, and the cycle continues until 10 years from now when they're pure EVs (with probably even greater than 416hp). Then he really can feel better about "unleashing" all that power.

The biggest challenges that lie ahead for EVs are engineering the consumers, not the cars.

+1

You nailed the issue, and the subversive ways that 100% EV's will infiltrate and eventually dominate the market. Of course, no such discussion is complete without paying homage to the unfathomably titanic impact that Tesla and Elon Musk are coming to have.

Yes, I'm still in the market for a Musk action figure...as one Musk detractor hissed, thinking it a clever insult. I say...not a bad idea at all!

I lust after the Panamera (hoping for the wagon version soon so I can buy a 5 year old example in about 7 years!) among other similar vehicles. I drool over the Maserati Quatroporte that just replaced a GranTurismo as well as her business partner's AMG CLS63. Yet I do care about the environment and would consider it a bonus to have a car with hybrid capability and even electric only modes. The hybrid mode, especially with the high charge rate battery pack as in the 918, greatly reduces friction brake use as well as fuel use.

The bigger and more powerful the vehicle, the greater the benefits of hybridization. Going from 22 to 25 mpg saves as much fuel as going from 44 to 56 mpg, and it's much easier to do the first than the second.

I actually saw an ad for this on TV today but wasn't sure if it was available yet.

While digging a bit, I found http://press.porsche.com/news/release.php?id=776" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. No mention of any DC FC support.
Panamera S E-Hybrid sets new standards in performance, efficiency, and convenience in everyday use.

The new Panamera S E-Hybrid improves upon the concept offered by the previous Panamera S Hybrid with a more powerful electric motor, a higher-performance battery that supplies more energy and is able be recharged from home or public vehicle charging stations. The electric drive produces 95 hp, more than double the power of the previous model’s electric motor (47 hp). Electricity is stored in a newly developed lithium-ion battery, which at 9.4 kWh has increased capacity over the previous battery (1.7 kWh). Via the integrated on-board charging componentry and the standard Porsche Universal Charger (AC), the battery can reach full charge within approximately two and a half hours when connected to a 240V power source.
The above "S E-Hybrid" starts at $99K.

Hummer seems out of style these days and I would not be surprised if the F350 went PHEV one of these years.
If I could get 20 to 40 EV miles in an F150/F350 I would trade away my LEAF in a heartbeat.

Saw the bird-on-a-wire zapping commercial run several times during games today. Porsche sending the message that electrification is the future can do more for evangelism than the combined voices of thousands of nerds.
