LG Chem has been tapped to supply batteries for electric cars to Renault, Europe's third largest carmaker.
The Korean company said Thursday that it will provide lithium-ion batteries for electric cars that Renault plans to begin mass-producing next year.
Renault and its partner Nissan are building plants around the world to be able to produce 500,000 electric vehicles by 2012.
LG Chem has so far secured deals to supply electric car batteries to eight global carmakers, including GM, Ford, Volvo, Hyundai, Kia and China's Changan Auto.
