LG Chem has been tapped to supply batteries for electric cars to Renault, Europe's third largest carmaker.

The Korean company said Thursday that it will provide lithium-ion batteries for electric cars that Renault plans to begin mass-producing next year.

Renault and its partner Nissan are building plants around the world to be able to produce 500,000 electric vehicles by 2012.

LG Chem has so far secured deals to supply electric car batteries to eight global carmakers, including GM, Ford, Volvo, Hyundai, Kia and China's Changan Auto.

Important thing to note is that LG will supply only about 10% of EVs Nissan/Renault plan to build in next 5 years.

Statik thinks it is because AESC just doesn't have the capacity right now.

It would take some pretty amazingly low $/kWh numbers to reach 10% of the 2.75 Million EV battery packs the Nissan/Renault Alliance has announced over the next 5 years (from a 2012 start date) with a $1.8B LG contract-- probably more like 5%. As I mentioned in my comment in the page you link to, more than likely this production is solely for Renault Samsung- the third largerst automaker in Korea (a market where there is high national loyalty and strong desire for advanced technology). I would expect an EV announcement from Renault's Korean division soon. I highly doubt you will see LG packs in Renault/Nissan cars in the US, EU or Japan.

I was taking lower # for the N/R - about 500K for 3 years or 1.5M. LG contract would yield about 150K packs @ $500/kwh. I guess the actual # will be somewhere between 5% and 10%.

ps : BTW, Renault currently has no place to get their packs for 2011/12 since AESC capacity is fully taken up by Leaf. I think tey are just starting to build their battery plants in Europe ... which will not be ready till late 2012.

For 2011, AESC is building 90,000 battery packs at the ZAMA plant for 50,000 LEAFs from Oppama plant. The other ~40,000 packs in 2011 go to Renault (production is limited in the first year as models launch).

For 2012, there is the Flin, France 100,000 unit battery plant and the Areiro, Portugal 50,000 pack plant which will likely be exclusively to supply Renault, due to nearby Renault EV manufacturing.

This is what I call a "good problem"! Car manufacturers already need ALOT more batteries and really working deals to source them. Contracts are getting signed. This is a very good thing :) .

Interesting ... I didn't know about the 90K.
