Well, I am sure there are many more sophisticated folks for whom this will not be a surprise, but it did surprise me. Of course, this applies only when the Volt's ICE is running....

yeah, but a lot less particulates (assuming you're not running bio-diesel in the VW). Newer diesel engines, at least in my understanding, have very low greenhouse gas emissions, it's the particulates that are the killer. Gas engines generally produce more greenhouse gasses and fewer particulates, diesels are the opposite. So you can probably say the same thing about a Prius...
