Hyundai IONIQ Plug-in
The Hyundai IONIQ Plug-in received the worst rating among the three IONIQ versions offered (conventional hybrid received four stars, while all-electric three-and-a-half star) by Autocar, netting just 3 of 5 stars. The all-electric version, reviewed eight months ago, did not impress in terms of excitement, but it was deemed a solid value proposition. The plug-in hybrid version comes last, but maybe still too early (despite already having been delayed almost a year over intial estimates), as the powertrain doesn’t seem to be polished enough. . . .

Autocar test. My summary, as a Prius Prime competitor it's fine (although still no U.S. price data), but as with the rest of their line, Hyundai (and Kia) still have a long way to go for anyone who cares about driving dynamics.

Even when it reaches ~50k annual production levels, it might be a while before Ioniq BEV discounts in the USA match those of other BEVs.

Hyundai IONIQ Electric production to increase by 50 %

Hyundai Motor Company wants to reduce the waiting time for its best selling electric car.


Currently, potential buyers of the Hyundai IONIQ Electric have to wait 4 to 5 months before delivery – in some markets even more. However, Hyundai wants to solve this problem and increase production by 50 % from 1.200 to 1.800 units per month at its plant in Ulsan, South Korea...


Considering that half of the production is to supply the South Korean market, while the other half is destined for foreign markets, a total of 1.800 monthly units still seem low, especially since roughly only 900 are destined for Europe and USA combined.

Anyways, another production increase is already expected:

“Because we expect that demands for IONIQ Electric will continue to increase in the future, we are planning to increase an output of IONIQ Electric in South Korean market up to 2.000 per month”.

This means that the total production output will be 4.000 monthly units – considering that Hyundai keeps splitting it the same way. Leaving 2.000 units for Europe and the USA...

. . . Chief among them is a 29-mile all-electric driving range, which, when depleted, effectively turns the Ioniq Plug-in into a regular hybrid capable of 52 mpg combined. It has a 119 MPGe estimate, for whatever that's worth. To put all those numbers into perspective, there's the Toyota Prius Prime (25 miles, 54 mpg combined, 133 MPGe), the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (48 miles, 42 mpg combined, 110 MPGe), Chevrolet Volt (53 miles, 42 mpg combined, 106 MPGe), and the Ioniq's mechanical sibling, the Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid (26 miles, 46 mpg combined, 105 MPGe).

Pricing for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid starts at $25,835, including destination. The Limited trim level starts at $29,185. By comparison, the regular Ioniq Hybrid starts at $22,200 for its Blue trim and goes up to $27,550 for the Limited trim. However, keep in mind that the Plug-in Hybrid is subject to a $4,500 federal tax rebate plus whatever your particular state doles out. As such, the Plug-in Hybrid is effectively cheaper.

That's also the case with the Toyota Prius Prime relative to the regular Prius. However, the Prime starts at just north of $27,995 (including destination). A regular Prius' base price is also only about $1,500 lower than the Ioniq Hybrid. In other words, the Plug-in Hybrid seems like a screaming bargain ... and if its siblings are any indication, it'll be a pretty appealing car, too. . . .

Plug-in variant of IONIQ cost $34000 before VAT ($41500 with VAT) (same as EV variant here) in the Czech Republic when in the USA plug-in variant is $22200 and EV variant $29500 :evil:

We have the same situation with several other EVs (€33K (before VAT) for 2018 Leaf), so I am waiting for Tesla Model 3
