Nissan LEAF-Based Electric SUV To Debut Next Month, Electric Sedan To Follow

Wed Sep 06, 2017 9:40 am

Good news!

http://insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-based- ... ext-month/

But it won’t go on sale until 2019.

Hot on the heels of the Leaf’s premiere yesterday, rumor has it Nissan will adapt its hardware for a fully electric SUV. Autocar has it on good authority the model in question will premiere as early as next month at the Tokyo Motor Show, but the actual launch won’t take place sooner than 2019. This leads us to believe we will first see a concept rather than the final production model.

If true, this is good move. Afterall there is no inexpensive EV SUV in the market. Tesla Model Y won't be here for 3+ years.

2nd Leaf : 5/4/2013 to 3/21/2017

The latter is set to use a 40-kWh battery pack, with an optional 60-kWh version to follow.

This is what Nissan needs to be doing. If they do follow through with this, then this will have been the earth-shattering announcement they made on the 5th.

My guess is unless the SUV is A Bolt clone it will probably be an epower candidate

Another teaser video, of the SUV concept.

Might turn out to be better looking than the 2018 LEAF, and couldn't have a much worse name.

PLEASE announce an AWD option...

Indeed! Considering the popularity of AWD in some of the larger EV markets, and the fact that AWD can be implemented in an EV with little or no net efficiency loss relative to 2WD, this should be a no-brainer.

Here in California, AWD is seen as a virtual necessity by many who spend time in the mountains, mainly because the authorities tend to require snow chains on 2WD vehicles even when there's only an inch or two of snow on the roads.

Also, EVs continue to be more popular among buyers who are more affluent and/or educated, precisely the demographic that often tends to be more inclined to take trips to the mountains. Here in SoCal, practically any EV with fast charging capability can reasonably reach the mountain resort areas, the high costs of CHAdeMO charging notwithstanding (high costs relative to the current, subsidized, low gasoline/diesel prices).
