Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG...[pronounced]...that "Volkswagen will be the automaker to mass-produce the electric car for everyone" didn't come from his German headquarters. It was made at the VW Electronics Research Laboratories (ERL) in Palo Alto, CA, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Adding emphasis was Martin Eberhard, a founder of Tesla who is now working at the ERL and making an effort to convince VW to take the Tesla approach to a battery pack.

The company's first all-electric to market, however, apparently will be an Audi-badged eTron, a low-volume model to be launched in late 2012.

If VW would actually get into the market it could be quite interesting

The Bulli’s electric motor resides up front and is powered by a 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that sits below the floor. The electric motor produces 114 hp (85 kW) and 199 lb-ft of torque, and is capable of propelling the 3200-pound retromobile to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 87 mph. The battery is said to provide a range of about 186 miles.

Martin E. is no longer with VW as of several months ago. I am wondering whether a "disagreement" about the laptop-battery-pack-strategy had anything to do with it. The Europeans are also investigating (and in some case "in bed with") other EU battery companies and R&D.
