Japanese randomness: culture, quirks, news, cheap or expensive things, etc.

Post random stuff about Japan here. :)

Last night while browsing YouTube via videos regarding MREs (mostly people trying MRE-equivalents from other countries), I stumbled across some (amusing to me videos) by "Texan in Tokyo". For some reason, the videos and the "star's" husband are amusing.

I enjoyed these or at least found them interesting:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEu-UmRDoTE - it's funny when she starts talking about train tickets. I've been on PLENTY of trains in Japan.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMV42D6-xOg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcaOCyPUDAg - the is the first time I'd heard of "bike jail" and I had no idea that umbrella theft was common in Japan

The above videos weren't that weird or funny, otherwise I'd have posted them in viewtopic.php?f=12&t=23780.

Here's one I ran across recently. Their devotion to perfection is intriguing. Whether carpentry, blue jeans, sword-making or grapes nothing is too mundane that it can't be elevated to its ultimate realization.

I noticed you're still working with polymers.

^^^
That's crazy! I'd heard of expensive square watermelons before but that's insane that any place would stock such expensive grapes and that anyone would buy them. Maybe they have to be expensive because a large % get tossed if nobody buys?

The rest in that video are still crazy expensive.

FWIW, the 1st thing in the 1st video I posted that Grace touches upon is how expensive fruit is in Japan. I can only guess it's not just confined to department stores, square watermelon and a $2000 set of grapes. I never shopped for any fruit on my trips (6, so far) to Japan. I'll have to try doing so at a variety of stores next time (e.g. dept stores, supermarkets and convenience stores (if they carry any fruit)).
