This is going to add $200m (probably triple that by the time they are done) to the cost of this project and it won't be ready until 2035 - 2040? Also the cost estimate probably doesn't include the cost of the electricity. Or do they plan to have an ability to selectively charge only those cars that subscribed?

That money would be much better invested in charging stations. 19 miles (in only 1 lane each way) along one route isn't likely to spur many people to modify their EVs for wireless charging and even fewer to adopt EVs. But a pervasive infrastructure of charging stations in each commercial and public parking lot and along street parking could make a real impact in EV acceptance.

I'm all for encouraging the adoption of EVs. But please let's not throw away dollars and claim to be green when we are actually hurting the cause.

OPM Syndrome so prevalent in Sacramento --- "Other People's Money"

What a spectacular waste of money. And it will be technologically dead before it is completed. By 2035-2040 electric cars will likely have ranges exceeding several hundred miles. Our grandchildren will wonder if legalizing pot in 2018 and this wasteful spending were somehow related

Sigh... :(

For that much money, why not make the road out of a rubber material on rollers like the walkway at the airport and have the cars sit still to be moved along? :)

Only if that supervisor is stoned which sounds like it. Can't wait to see how the cars would connect. Perhaps they can give BLINK another $200M to solve that.

A @&#(ing idiotic use of money. The tech to utilize this will never take off in part because it can't even be scaled to the rest of the country. Imagine electrifying a roadway when every winter it's getting dismantled by frost heave, as every roadway in the north east is.

But spending the other 5.8 billion dollars over the next ~20 years to improve this stretch of freeway so that it can more efficiently poison the local residents seems entirely reasonable to all of you?

A $6 billion proposal to add lanes to the 710 Freeway now has an environmental twist to it: a source of electricity embedded in the pavement to power electric cars.

...Hahn's proposal would add one lane of traffic in each direction on the 710 with each of those lanes powering customized electric vehicles.

Her office said the estimated cost of adding the technology is $200 million, which Hahn said is a small price for cleaning up the air Southern Californians breathe.

"Keeping it the way it is, the 'diesel death zone' is already expensive," said Hahn. "People are paying for the current pollution that comes along the 710 Freeway with their health."...

I don't see anywhere in the above posts where anyone stated that. Perhaps one should refrain from false accusations.

If you want us to evaluate the other $5.8b spend and plan, we would need a lot more info than what the article provided. Since the focus of the article was the electrification plans which will accomplish nothing good, that is what we were discussing in this thread. If you have links to support that the $5.8b is being spent to increase the poisoning, that would be good to provide. But please refrain from putting words into our mouths.
