Interesting/unusual junkyard gems

Wed Sep 19, 2018 10:59 pm

Anyone here look at junkyard "gems" at places like Autoblog? Some of the cars I have to laugh at (e.g. Pintos, Vegas or GM X cars) and others are interesting.

I do recall the '96 Camry wagon (https://www.autoblog.com/2018/09/19/jun ... -le-wagon/) but totally didn't realize (until a comment in Facebook) that it had two rear wipers. Weird!

Was funny that they linked to a page about the Toyota Cavalier (https://autoweek.com/article/classic-ad ... lier-japan). Was a Chevy Cavalier  rebadged as a Toyota and adapted for the Japanese market. Too bad some of the videos there are dead. I watched bits of that weird training video. Looks like the Toyota Cavalier (w/steering wheel on the correct side for Japan) is being driven around LA.

We had one of those Camry wagons for a couple of years. I liked the cavernous design, and my housemate liked that it was essentially the same Camry LE we also had, back to the rear of the back seats. Alas, it turned out to be a real Lemon, and we sold it - to a guy who had a brake line blow soon afterward. We reimbursed him. I hope he junked it.

The author Murilee Martin also writes for other publications. My favorite is "Down on the Junkyard" or "Junkyard Find" on The Truth About Cars. https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/categ ... ditorials/

BTW Toyota Cressida wagons also had the dual rear wiper, even before the Camry wagon (the one based on the previous generation Camry had only one wiper, like usual):

BTW in Australia you can get a Camry wagon based on the 4th gen (1997-2001) sedan, but we never got this version. I believe they were assembled by Toyota in Australia, back when they still built cars Down Under (nobody does today, not even Ford or GM Holden).
