Japan and whale hunts

China and Rhino horns

England and Brexit

US and Automatic weapons

One wonders how you irradicate the stupid out of a modern society?

Maybe this will make you feel less upset at the Japanese:
In Japan, almost 450,000 more people died than were born in 2018

Why would that make anyone happy. That is a sad fact.

Because of the not having children discussion that found its way into http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=542098#p542098.

(I glossed over most of that but there were definitely some amusing responses like http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=543611#p543611...)

That said, I have read in numerous places that Japan's shrinking population does and will cause a bunch of problems. Examples at https://www.businessinsider.com/japans-population-is-shrinking-demographic-time-bomb-2018-6.

Yes, individual countries like Japan have birth rates well below the replacement rate, and that will cause those countries demographic problems that will require immigration to fix (and Japan places a high value on the homogeneity of their society, so it would be a big change for them). China is another country facing a demographic hole, thanks to the 'one-child' policy that was continued much too long. In order to shrink the world's population without causing this sort of issue, a world birthrate around 1.8 - 1.9 seems to be about right, below the replacement rate of 2.1 (for developed countries; higher for those with higher infant mortality rates), but above the level where you're facing what in China (2016 birth rate 1.62) is called the 4-2-1 problem: one grandchild will be supporting the retirement of two parents and up to four grandparents. The alternative is that better health care and lifestyles allow more people who want to work to do so as long as they want, or (as is being developed in Japan), robot companions will take over much of elderly health care and assistance.

One reason the Japanese are doing so much with Robotics is they are trying to come up with robots or androids that will care for the increasing numbers of elderly Japanese. I'm not kidding.

Oh so are you a vegan too! Awesome! High five brother!

If you aren't a vegan, you can think about the industry that you are supporting every day called animal agriculture. Take a look at this before judging the japanese that hard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQRAfJyEsko

There is a challenge going on every year called veganuary, if you truly are interested in making a better world https://veganuary.com/

I view hunting whales much the same as I would view hunting humans.

Cows -- not so much. But to answer your question, I am vegan.

That is terrible. That is the problem with the Asian race... Life is cheap, and the life of any animal is just a commodity to take as you please.. What about shark fin soup, turtle soup, eating tortured dogs...

In today's Globalist society, there should be some international laws to ban the hunting of mammals and other large animals in the ocean. We can get enough food from the smaller, more populous fish and shellfish... Whales are the world's gentle giants that should be nurtured and appreciated...

A bunch of neckbeards in the most polluting and resource destroying first world nations criticizing another country for killing a handful of whales while using electronics essentially made by slaves with resources bought from groups committing brutal atrocities in Africa. Cool thread, guys.

I’ll just say this: you’re probably doing more harm than good. The whaling industry in Japan is not a money-maker. It is propped up by the government, and they have to come up with weird schemes to get rid of the meat like putting it in school lunches. Right wing politicians get public support for this corporate welfare by claiming whale meat is an important part of Japan’s culinary history (it’s not) and that foreigners are trying to take it away. When you make threads like this and say racist stuff like “that’s the problem with the Asian race,” you’re giving ammunition to those who whale.

That guy is in my filter, because he regularly blurts out stupid and offensive stuff. I suggest you ignore him as well. While it's quite true that the US is in a poor position, as a national entity, to criticize Japanese whaling, there is still validity in doing it as individuals. Killing whales is closer to killing human beings that it is to killing fish, and politely shutting up to avoid embarrassing the Japanese while they engage in it doesn't seem a viable option either.

Funny it seems like just a couple weeks ago I was hearing how wonderful Japan was.

Look at the bright side, at least they aren't keeping them in captivity for millions of people to see in person. Now when bad things happen to whales it's out of sight out of mind so few are likely to be concerned.

Thanks Gabriela.

It is a wonderful country. Spent two weeks there, going as far south as Hiroshima. Met up with cwerdna at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Japan is not without its issues, and neither are we here in the US.

Couldn't agree with you more. It is a lovely, clean country. Very little crime. Huge amounts of history, (some good, some bad). People are very polite. Do nothing to make themselves stand out. It reminds me of the US during the 50s with a hell of a lot more technology.

Spent two weeks there last year for a Buddhist wedding. 3 weeks the year before for festival season. Heading back this summer for festival season again.

Japan has been harvesting whales since 800BC. It sucks that anyone still does. These are the countries that still harvest whales: Faroe Islands, Norway, Iceland, and Japan.

Indeed. RonDawg's statement I think sums it up best.

Right now, it seems like we are seeing an ugly side of their criminal justice system and apparent issues w/corporate governance there (i.e. the Carlos Ghosn arrest and continued re-arresting, interrogations where they're not allowed to have their lawyer present, person can be held for days (which can be extended) w/o being charged of a crime, etc.)

I've been there 6x for vacation (5x to Tokyo Motor Show) and will probably be back there again for Tokyo Motor Show 2019 + some other things.

OK... Let's see... The title of this post is "Despicable"... I think we can all agree that Japan's practice of hunting Whales, Sharks, Turtles, and other animals IS WRONG. It is BIG MONEY because those countries have a strange appetite for these things... So you and my friend "Leftie" are incensed and call it "racist" that I used the word "Asians"? Come on. By the way I highly respect the Japanese people, their country, and their culture. We in the west could learn a lot by following their customs and ways of life...

Oh, by the way, I think that it is Passé of you to pull out your RACIST rant that the west uses products made by "slaves" and you talk about ancient transgressions in "Africa". Let's make things clear... NOBODY, who is alive today, has a moral, ethical, or legal responsibility to make any retribution or blame for any actions that may have been committed by previous generations of people who look like them.. Similarly, no one who is alive today is entitled to any different treatment or retribution because they happen to look like previous groups which were exposed to transgressions. I would LOVE to discuss these political issues with you on another thread...

I agree that first world nations are guilty of extreme pollution of the planet, especially trash, which has also polluted the oceans and other ecosystems. But I will not let anyone start mud-slinging because someone is AGREEING WITH THE ORIGINAL POSTER that a country (or a race, like Asians) are killing or abusing Animals (or people). Let's keep this thread on track... YES IT IS DESPICABLE THAT JAPAN IS GOING TO START KILLING WHALES FOR NON-ESSENTIAL REASONS.. IF YOU DISAGREE.... YOU CAN GO YONDER...

Why is Japan's harvesting Whales any more despicable than what we do or other countries do?

We are simply a self centered, short sighted, me me me species. That will never change.
