Hurricane/TS Harvey - fuel shortages possible?

Wed Aug 30, 2017 11:46 am

You'd think shutting down the largest refinery would have an impact

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/08/30/na ... water.html

All the yocal quips that they'd never buy an EV until they can recharge in two minutes are seemingly based on the assumption that pulling up to gas pump and there always being fuel available is some immutable law of nature. I remain convinced that some situation, even temporary, that causes fuel to not be so convenient like we saw in the 70s is what will really get more people to reassess the situation.

critical thinking and common sense aren't very common. That's why we're in the minority.

I drove past very long lines yesterday and today. Like out of the parking lot into the street long. Also saw two stations displaying the 'out of gas' signs. I'm assuming this is some of local panic because of the holiday weekend?

Seeing those lines was very odd - looked like something out of the 70's.

Most of the gas stations near my house were (and still are) out of gas. I just had to immortalize the moment...

Colonial pipelines 1 and 2 are shut down:
Kallanish Energy wrote:Colonial Pipeline has shut down its Line 1 and Line 2 on Thursday due to supply constraints caused by storm-related refinery closures and the impact to Colonial’s facilities west of Lake Charles, La., Kallanish Energy reports.

Line 2, which mainly transports diesel and aviation fuels, had its service suspended Wednesday evening. Line 1, which transports gasoline, was operating at reduced rates but was shut down yesterday, Colonial said, in a statement.
Kallanish Energy wrote:Its shutdown could cause major fuel supply disruptions, as the volume is roughly one in every eight barrels of fuel consumed in the country.
With Labor Day weekend upon us and many on the East Coast starting to prepare for Hurricane Irma, shortages seem likely here in VA.

Interesting start to this Minot News report:
http://www.minotdailynews.com/opinion/editorials/2017/09/panic-greed-driving-gas-price-increase/
One would have to be a committed pedestrian to have not noticed the considerable increase in the price of gasoline since Hurricane Harvey smashed into the Texas coast.
Oh, BTW, I haven't noticed any change in the price of gasoline since I've been driving the Leaf since 2011. My only gasoline-powered device is a rototiller, filled with canned gas (one bottle purchased this Spring).
