Well, maybe they aren't spy pictures, but they sure look like it.

Before cars are released to the public, they need real world driving tests. The only way to do that is to take them onto the open road. Navigate through traffic, potholes, and around semi trucks. This can not be simulated. That's why all the big automakers, Nissan included, disguise the new models of their vehicles. This allows them to drive through the public streets without leaking what the next model year looks like.

Ha, that's hilarious! I think it's just more of a goofy paint job on that Nissan Leaf then spy photos!
 
Yeah, the Chevy HHR has a ton of -spy photo- paint schemes, so that just seems to be the current trend. The uglier it is, the more custom it is!
