2018 Leaf S Charge Package Option

Tue May 08, 2018 6:42 am

I'm an EV newbie who's considering leasing a new 2018 Leaf S - I don't really want or need any of the optional stuff. The one thing that puzzles me is the $1590.00 optional "Charging Package". According to the Nissan website, it just includes a cable and a Quick Charging port. I've got several other ICE cars I can drive as needed and would only use the Leaf for the daily commute to work (appx 20 miles total daily use). I don't anticipate ever needing Quick Charge.

$1590.00 seems like a lot for a cable and QC port. Does it also include an on-board charger so I can just plug the cable into any 240VAC outlet?
Or, could I save (appx $1k) and just use an aftermarket home-type Level 2/240VAC charger like a Clipper Creek (or similar) unit?

Advantages and disadvantages?

Thanks,

Jeff

The package includes the QC port, and the L1/L2 portable EVSE. This EVSE can use both 110v and 220v. via it's built-in adapter.

If you already have a home L2 EVSE installed, and don't feel that you would ever need to quick charge, then you can probably pass on this.

A used LEAF with a good battery would serve your needs just as well and cost half or less

You may be right. The upgraded charge cable is probably worth $300 or so (considering it's from Nissan). You can get a functional equivalent for a bit less third party. I would suggest going to Plugshare and searching for CHAdeMO chargers in your area. If there are none around you, then your question is answered. If there are any convenient to any trips you might want to do, then you should consider it. Keep in mind that a day trip to a destination 40+ miles away would be a candidate for wanting a quick charge.
