FRANKLIN, Tennessee — Nissan is finalizing the process for getting the electric Leaf into the hands of consumers, including a required home visit by an electrical contractor. The Japanese automaker broke ground on Wednesday on the Smyrna, Tennessee, facility that will produce lithium-ion batteries for the Leaf and announced that about 13,000 U.S. consumers have already placed reservations for the electric car.

The Leaf will be built in Smyrna beginning in 2012 with an annual volume pegged at 150,000 vehicles.

Nissan has been scrambling to clarify the situation with Leaf reservations, following some media reports that the electric vehicle is "sold out" for 2010. When asked by Inside Line if the reports were true, Nissan spokesman David Reuter said, "No, not really.

"Our plan is to continue the reservation process," Reuter said, despite the high demand for the car.

Katherine Zachary, a Nissan spokesperson, said that Nissan has the capacity to produce 50,000 Leaf vehicles globally for the 2011 model year.
