Duosida EVSE Just Arrived.

Thu Oct 06, 2016 6:19 pm

I was looking for a cheap option for an emergency EVSE to keep in my trunk and figured that Alibaba might have an answer for me. I contacted a few vendors with Duosida branded EVSE units, but this one got back to me really quick.

I contacted them on September 22nd and the gave me a quote with shipping of only $145 USD. Sounded too good to be true, but also not too much of a loss if its a hunk of junk.

Just on Monday the actual unit arrived and I am going to give it a try when I get home from work tonight. Here are some pictures.

Good to know the real price of these things. I may get one to test / take apart.

People could make a pretty good quick buck by organizing a group buy for one of these and charging $100 in markup... Imagine what the manufacturer pays to build these things. I bet they are still making a pretty penny on the $145 or else its not worth selling to US customers at that rate.

I'm for sure going to have one of the engineers where I work take a look at it with me when our workload calms down, and I will post pictures when that happens.

Actually what I like about it is it's also rated for 120v :)
Many other of the cheaper EVSEs are only rated for 240v(L2) requiring you to not only carry around the L2 EVSE but also your factory EVSE. When testing could you also verify this works with 120v? From the online photo it looks like your EVSE comes with a standard 120v US wall plug, is that the case :? If so the first thing I'd do is to cut off the end and install something like a L6-30P or maybe a 6-20P if thats what you have for a 240v outlet, whatever you do, don't wire 240v to a 5-20 outlet :o

I purposely bought this EVSE as my emergency keep in the trunk unit, so I specifically ordered it with the standard plug. There are all sorts of options that Zencar will give you. I did test it to charge my leaf all last night and it worked just as well as my standard EVSE on one of the 120v outlets in my car port. I have still not setup any 240v there, but if all goes well I might get a second Duosida for that purpose and do a more permanent install at home. The majority of my charging is done at work on their Bosch L2 units for free!

Cool, just remember it probably draws the same 16a as 240v so don't plug it into a 15a circuit or use with a light weight(less than 12G) extension cord :)
Personally I use a L6-30p(240v 30a) plug on most of my EVSEs and I've built several converter plugs to allow me to use them on various other outlets, including to the standard household outlet. I would not suggest going the other way, that is making a converter plug to go from a 240v outlet to a standard 120v household outlet. While it would be OK for dual voltage EVSE use, you wouldn't want it falling into the hands of someone who didn't know and might try plugging it into a 240v outlet and then try plugging some other 120v only device into it

I agree that the 30 amp twist lock plug is the best if you want to adapt it to other formats. Its simply the most secure. I will keep in mind that I draw 16 amps all the time with the Duosida. The next one I order will probably have a twist lock style plug, but first I need to add the new circuit. Actually I just need to re route my range since I have a wolf gas range with old school pilot lights and no need for the plug there. This will of course be an undertaking and it's not going to happen anytime soon.

So far so good with the Duosida, I'm using it at home again tonight. I'll probably use it for the next few weeks as my main EVSE at home, then properly mount my Nissan one when I have TIME.

I do a lot of business with suppliers on Alibaba, but a EVSE from an unknown supplier would be a little sketchy for me from a safety standpoint. I am new to the EV community, so is this brand a respected one?

Duosida is probably the most common out of china branded EVSE. If you see a cheap EVSE on amazon or on the forums its often that brand. Are they good? I think that is still up for debate, but I've been using mine everyday now and it has consistently been working.
