I'm planning on buying and assembling an OpenEVSE unit, mainly because it's the only way I've found to get a long enough cord (35'). I get my choice of NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 plugs, as shown here https://store.openevse.com/products/ac-cable-nema-14-50p-50a.

I don't have my outlet installed yet, so I can choose either. Does it matter? Is one more versatile than the other?
Mainly I'd be thinking of where I could use the cord and plug to charge the car at other locations, frankly I can't imagine plugging anything else into this new outlet.

Thanks

Topher

The 14-50 would let you charge at RV parks, so it's the most useful overall. Even though the EVSE doesn't need a Neutral wire, have one installed in the outlet, of course.

FYI, Zencar will put a longer cable on their EVSE if you pay a little extra:

+1, while technically the 6-50 would be a better fit for EVSE use(which doesn't need the neutral) the 6-50 plug is much harder to find in the wild. I'd bet on a 10 to 1 ratio or more on a chance of finding a 14-50 vs 6-50. Also since Tesla has kind of standardized on the 14-50 we'll probably be seeing more in the near future.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

The other bonus with the 14-50R is that it can be used by whomever you might sell your house to as a dryer outlet.

Also, on evseadapters.com and on Amazon, you'll find a bunch of "Tesla" adapter cables which, for the most part, can be used with any EVSE that has a 14-50p on it. For example, an RV park TT30 adapter cable (14-50R to TT30P) so you can charge your Leaf from a TT30 outlet. I can do that with my portable Zencar EVSE, charging 120V@24A.

Sure, so they can put a dryer out on the patio instead of in the washer/dryer closet :)

I used the 14-50 outlet in my garage to test a used dryer I bought before I hauled it downstairs to the laundry room.
