From the 2018 Leaf Manual:
"Use the EVSE with the plug in an upright
position. (The cord should extend
down from the outlet.)"

Does anyone have an idea why the orientation would matter for the EVSE. My 240V outlet is only about 14 inches above my workbench mounted on cabinets fixed to the wall. So, the cord makes a 90 deg bend and the EVSE is mounted in the bracket horizontally. It works fine.

As long as the cord isn't stressed by the weight of the EVSE (or by anything else) the orientation doesn't matter. They may have been concerned about people installing the EVSE holder upside down (the EVSE would fall out of it) .

As others have said the orientation really doe snot matter. Do not plug a 120V unit into 240V. I understand that some 2018 cars come with dual voltage units but earlier cars were strictly 120V unless modified.
