Recharging with Modified Sine Wave?

Tue Aug 07, 2018 10:44 am

Charging with inverter generator no problem, will a Modified Sine Wave generator work without harm?

2014 Leaf 40,000 miles 12 bars.

I'm not sure if it will work, but the 2018 manual advises against using a generator to charge the car.

A normal generator produces a natural sine wave same as Hoover Dam. Sure the wave could get distorted depending on the reactance of the load. In general the charger is not that picky.

You may have an issue of the EVSE detecting open ground and may need to tie the neutral and ground together with a bonding plug if you are charging at 120 volts. Not sure on 240 volts if this would be needed.
