Glad you started a new thread. This is huge news and will affect all Leaf owners. One of the first questions I have is: what will happen to the "Leaf Link" App I've been using for years? I'm going to send an email to the Contact Info in the App Help.

Not sure what the point of upgrading is for us with 2G radios.

There's about 10 other threads on this topic, but the Reader's Digest version is Nissan is not just going to let the telematics function "die" in the Leaf; it may not be free, but there will be an option to replace the modem.

Has it been documented that the rebadged "Nissan Connect EV" won't support the current modem?
(I know 2G is slated to "eventually" go away..)

I would say the hardware in the car is not related to the website/server that they are changing (sort of the "back end" of the system). In other words, you could say this is Nissan's response/solution to everyone's b*tching about CarWings :p

No, it is really nothing more than a rejiggered website and back end processor. It has nothing to do, directly, with the radio modem in the car and they are two completely separate issues...

No mention of 3G or 4G cellular connection that I can find. What's up with that? December of 2016 is coming pretty soon! Shame to see all that pretty NissanConnect stuff stop working.
Well, I'm sure they don't want to say what new technology they are using for as soon as they do, everyone will figure out that Nissan has already effectively abandoned every Carwings subscription out there and have no plan/desire to ever reconnect them.

Apparently you are new to the forums, this has been reposted in numerous threads.

AT&T has announced plans to terminate its 2G network coverage on December 31, 2016. How does this affect my access to CARWINGS?

AT&T is a third party that Nissan does not control, and technology in this area is constantly evolving. Nissan strives to stay ahead of evolution in technology but that is sometimes a challenge given the nature of technology and changes made by third parties outside of Nissan's control. We are exploring alternative network solutions for LEAF CARWINGS service options, and although we don't have anything to announce now, if and when we do we will advise customers.

What will happen to my CARWINGS access on December 31, 2016 if there are no alternative network solutions?

CARWINGS requires a compatible 2G GSM/GPRS cellular network provided by AT&T. 2G cellular network is not available in all areas and/or available at all times. Cellular technology is evolving, and changes to cellular networks provided by independent companies are not within Nissan's control. Like other devices that rely on 2G network coverage, once the 2G network is terminated, CARWINGS will not function unless equipment replacements, upgrades, or alternative 2G network coverage are available at that time, which Nissan cannot guarantee. Nissan not responsible for associated costs that may be required for continued CARWINGS operation due to cellular network termination (including equipment upgrades, if available, or roaming charges on alternative networks).

Both Nissan and forum members are working on methods to make it work after the change. It will likely cost something to upgrade or retrofit no matter if Nissan offers it or one of our favorite warranty voiders does.

Either way Nissan isn't worried about revealing it, they just don't like to communicate details for any reason.

As a moderator, you should know how to check that I'm not new. What I'm saying is, Nissan is never going to offer LEAF owners any upgrade path when 2G goes away. You will be cut off and let go. I guess you heard it here first.

If you think a 3rd party solution will work, you likely have not seen how that system is locked down to the VIN of the vehicle. Nissan will not release anything that would give a 3rd party remote access to the computer system of the vehicle. That is trouble they would never want

Can you point to one statement from Nissan that says that the WILL offer an upgrade path? I'm on record on this forum saying that Nissan will not do anything for the current Carwings owners IF 2G goes away. I think AT&T may well leave it up past the Dec. 16 deadline (just as Google did not cancel its Voice service over XMPP when they said they would) but once AT&T does cancel 2G service- all Nissan vehicles with Carwings will halt - and Nissan won't care.

Pls use the other specific thread to talk about upgrade for older Leafs. That subject is OT here.

Looks like my post was on topic (the new technology used for the Carwings replacement) before your fellow moderator decided to take a swipe at me. Maybe you all should work that out internally.

It seems you took objection to my post. If you think it was meant in a derogatory fashion I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.

There are many differing opinions on what can be done by Nissan and by 3rd parties to addresss the technical issues. You seem to think 3rd parties can't do anything about it. I just thought you might want to know that someone on the forum says he can.

I don't have the post to quote but I can tell you that my memory says it was JeremyW (whose profile picture says "I void warranties" a list of his posts are at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/search.php?author_id=4403&sr=posts if you wish to peruse them. Wait I just did a few searches and found it.

I'm working on a replacement.

Details in January.

Edit: The replacement will use T-Mobile.

taken from http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=18616 (CARWINGS Ends December 31st 2016) though his post was in 2014 so that details in Jan would be 8 months ago. I haven't seen the follow up to that.

I tried looking for that the other day and couldn't find it and wrote the message as was without the reference. I'm sorry but if you think he can't do it you might need to discuss that with him.

Maybe I should merge all the threads about Carwings with the Dec 31 2016 date in them? I'm just trying to reduce the effort of people like you who want to discuss the issue who haven't seen all the prior posts.

That's right, remove your offending comment so no one else can ever see it and then publicly blame ME for misunderstanding YOU. That's class. Why not just say.... "I was wrong for what I said. I apologize jpadc." That's how a moderator could set a better tone on the board.

I never suggested Nissan couldn't fix this. I said they won't. I knew that the minute Nissan made me sign a statement that indicated I was aware that they could not control what happened to Carwings after December 1, 2016, even though I was buying an S model that did not have Carwings.

JeremyW, a well respected member here, or some other 3rd party may well be able to get a swap of the radio/sim to carry data over t-mobile. That's not the problem. The problem will always be getting Nissan to be willing to allow ANY non-contracted carrier to send signals to the car that controls any aspect of its operation. Given that this is the subject of current pending federal regulations:

http://www.edmunds.com/car-news/hac...protect-drivers-from-auto-security-risks.html

there is not a chance that Nissan will open a path to allow non-contracted parties to potentially control their cars remotely. You and some others here don't seem to appreciate the dangers of doing so. I'll admit that inviting current LEAF owners to join the new Nissan connect portal is an encouraging sign from Nissan that they won't just abandon current owners (or a disingenuous way to avoid owner outrage right now as they are trying to launch the new model), and I also think AT&T won't just cut off service everywhere in December but just as towers get upgraded they won't include 2G so the death will be drug out over a long time.

I know opinions differ, but given the fact that Nissan has not lifted a finger on a battery replacement path outside of a required legal settlement, mine's not based on blind hope.

Boy this thread is getting lively! I don't want CarWings discussion to "die", so I think we should either merge threads or keep them all (including this one)--but we need a place to discuss:
1) Impending shutdown of ATT's 2G network (which admittedly could be dragged out) and
2) An upgrade path for the current Leaf modem (home-grown or otherwise--although I'm very sceptical that anything but a Nissan engineered solution will work for security reasons)

While I have no proof/evidence that Nissan will provide such an upgrade, I find it hard to believe that they will let the telematics in every Leaf manufactured to date to "die on the vine", not to mention they do get some benefit out of remote data collection. The fact that they are upgrading/converting the back-end of the CarWings system (to NissanConnect) on September 29 tells me they do have an interest in maintaining the system and may make changes without a lot of warning.

Check the email address you use for Carwings and you may get this notice of the upcoming change ... mine showed up in the spam folder as appears to be automated (anonymous sender):

I was working on a small aftermarket replacement but work and life got in the way. I suspect there's very little money in it anyway for the time put in. OVMS was/is working on a leaf port, but haven't heard anything in months.

Essentially the system on the car side of things is very simple. It's one CAN message on the EV CAN bus that does it. From an earlier post: http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=4131&hilit=open+CAN+discussion&start=416

JeremyW said:
As far as I can tell, the command from the telematics (EV bus message 56E) is pretty simple and made up of a few bit flags.
Code:
hex	binary	state
86	10000110	idle
46	01000110	status
4E	01001110	cc on
56	01010110	cc off
66	01100110	remote charge
From the highest bit: idle, VCM wake-up logic line status, remote charge, cc off, cc on, unknown, unknown, 0. The unknowns could be 12v supply voltage voltage ok and "within cell coverage"

There's a logic line from the TCU to the VCM in 2011-2012 models, 2013+ models the VCM is woken over CAN with message 68 with a single data byte of 0.
