It sounds like someting is scraping, or like bearing lost all lubrication. But I know it is VSP - that artificial sound that can be turned off.

So I have to turn it off every time, and considering removing speaker.
Couldn't Nissan use nicer sound, not emitating scraping? I'd feel better with some beeping.

Alternatively, how could I replace this sound wtih steam train or jet plane?

Search the forum here and you will find a mod that will automatically turn it off for you each time you power up.
For me, it has become an automatic part of my startup process to immediately press the button after I turn the car on.

Google Search bar on MNL search page found many references to disabling the VSP.
Here is the first. If this doesn't work there is something in the manual about turning up volume controls on the audio system. ;)

Scraping? All I have ever heard is a faint whistle, and that only with my window down and close to a building that would reflect the sound. Is this a very high frequency sound? I know my ears don't go up above about 11 kilocycles.

Why not make a recording of the sound and post it. I have tried to hear the VSP and it's not easy to detect inside the car even with the windows rolled down.

i couldn't hear it at first too bacause it it a natural sound, in a way.
Try this - drive slow - 5 mph - and repeat turn on / turn off VSP. You'll realise car moves silent and it's VSP that has been scraping:) Untill you know it's there - it's not bothering you. I wa unlucky to learn how exactly VSP sounds - now i can't stand it

I read thru link above - surely not an easy way to have OFF as default:) i think i'll live with it for a while, but when i'll have time - will unplug it alltogether, don't see it usefull - pedestrians can hear it anyway if it's quiet neighbourhood and won't hear it on busy street

Can I change the sound to Ride of The Valkyries?

The VSP sound is not programmable or customizable, unfortunately. Many new owners ask about it. The closest system that would come to that is Horntones FX-550.

Here's the sound:

I came up with a simple circuit to auto-disable upon startup, but you can still enable it any time you like, and you still get all the other noises. For 2012+ you don't need to add a switch for the "re-enable" option, all you have to do is VERY BRIEFLY tap the power button while driving more than 10 mph. The power will not turn off with a brief press, but this will toggle the VSP back on.

Personally, it was mainly that reverse noise that I hated. I fully expected Cylon Raiders to swoop down after hearing Draedus contact! =)
