Bluetooth 5.0

Mon Dec 24, 2018 11:43 am

Guys,

I just wanted to ask, is anybody using a Bluetooth 5.0 handset in their 2018 LEAF and is it working ok for you? I ask this because I have read that 5.0 is not backwardly compatible 4.x devices, even thought it operates on the same 2.4GHz frequency band?

I have been thorough the Owners Manual and while there are plenty of references to Bluetooth, there is nothing to indicate the Bluetooth version...

Hope you all have a good Christmas.

Niall

Where have you read that it's not backwards compatible?

I had to do some digging to even find some example phones with Bluetooth 5.0.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth#Bluetooth_5 claims
The Bluetooth SIG presented Bluetooth 5 on 16 June 2016. Its new features are mainly focused on emerging Internet of Things technology. The Samsung Galaxy S8 launched with Bluetooth 5 support in April 2017. In September 2017, the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X launched with Bluetooth 5 support as well. Apple also integrated Bluetooth 5 in their new HomePod offering released on February 9, 2018.[80] Marketing drops the point number; so that it is just "Bluetooth 5" (not 5.0 like Bluetooth 4.0). The change is for the sake of "Simplifying our marketing, communicating user benefits more effectively and making it easier to signal significant technology updates to the market."[81]

A quick look at https://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/ shows the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, XR, XS and XS Max all support Bluetooth 5.0.

I can personally say I have my iPhone 8 (previously w/iOS 11.x.x and now 12.1.1) paired with the head unit of my '13 SV w/premium w/no problem. Have been using iPhone 8 w/this vehicle since late Nov 2017. Over Bluetooth, I've received and made calls + done Bluetooth music/audio streaming w/o issue.

Seems like any recent (introduced April 2017 or later) flagship or high end or higher end phone from Apple, Samsung, LG or Google is likely to support Bluetooth 5. If not sure, double check the specs of the phone.

So, maybe a better question is, if you don't know if your phone has Bluetooth 5, below are some that do (besides all the iPhones I already listed). Have your paired these w/your '18 or '19 Leaf and made phone calls and done BT music streaming?
Samsung Galaxy S8
Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+ https://www.samsung.com/us/smartphones/galaxy-s9/specs/
Samsung Note9: https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-note9/specs/
Google Pixel 2: https://store.google.com/us/product/pix ... s?hl=en-US
Google Pixel 3: https://store.google.com/us/product/pix ... s?hl=en-US

There are probably WAY more.

'19 Bolt Premier
'13 Leaf SV w/premium package (owned)
'13 Leaf SV w/QC + LED & premium packages (lease over, car returned)

Please don't PM me with Leaf questions. Just post in the topic that seems most appropriate.

Thanks for getting back to me. My question arose out of a search for the Samsung S10 specifications. It was specifically, Bluetooth clarification that I was looking for.

So the S10 has Bluetooth 5.0:

5.0 backward compatibility was highlighted on:

Delighted to hear Bluetooth 5.0 IS working in your 13 SV

Regards,

Niall
