Ipod - moving through artists (or albums)

I looked through the manual and the forum and I don't see this being asked yet.

I have an "older" 160GB ipod that is fairly full of music. Is there a way to "jump" to the "m's" for example when searching by artists? I tried hitting the progress bar but that didn't work - the only thing I could do was to hit the page down button over and over and over again....

Trying to find albums or artists near the end of the alphabet will be tiresome doing this.

Yes - it is a pain. I normally just run playlists ...
