Looking to get a phone mount for the Leaf. Any recommendations?

I put one of those "non slip" mats (specifically sold for phones) on the flat surface in front of the cup holders and simply lay my iPhone there. It never moves and I can still see the face if I need to.

I think what your asking is like "What brand of jeans fits best?" :)

I have gone through at least a dozen and finally found one I can tolerate. It fits in the CD slot or a crack / gap in the dash. I have one in the van, wagon and leaf and haven't had one break or drop a phone.

That's the same style holder I had in my old car but it attached to the air vents. I loved it but I found that the air vents in the leaf were not a good place to attach it to, it wouldn't stay up.

I had this style so I'd say avoid them.

I had a iOttie One Touch wind-shield mount, but I was hoping to find a non-windshield mount. Wind shield mounts obstructs my view. It would be nice to be able to mount it, say, near the vents, but the Leaf lacks suction-able flat surfaces, and vent mounts are usually too flimsy.

I've bought three iOttie One Touch mounts over the years (not because they broke but because they are good mounts, and I've had different devices). They stick well to the dash or the windshield. There is a horizontal flat surface just above the upper left corner of the black center stack bezel. It's a perfect fit for the suction cup. It is textured, but don't worry, it sucks itself in place just fine (just make sure both mounting surfaces are clean- wash the suction cup if it's dirty with warm soapy water).

The camera was at chest level, so it looks like it's blocking the view out the windshield- but it isn't for me. If you adjust your mount to sit low, it will give you a full clear view out the windshield.

I use Mountek mounts myself.
I don't have one of the newer, magnetic kind.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004G1L52Q

It's designed to slide into a CD player slot.
In the Leaf, I actually open the head unit and put it into the space at the top, then close the unit to have it clamp down on the mount.
Works pretty well.

I second the use of the iOttie One Touch. It uses a sticky suction cup that will attach to the curved, textured dash board. See this thread.

I have this one, but I paid $13 on sale.

Stickyback velcro on the above vertical surface and back of phone works great for me. Can see the display and remove easily for security.

As an update: it worked pretty well until our first real cold snap. At that point, it fell off the dash and I've not been able to get it to stay connected since.

And an update to that: I contacted iOttie back in November and they replaced the One Touch for free (sent me a new one and told me to discard the old one). I installed it and haven't had a problem since. I now have them two of our other cars and haven't had a problem.
