Help: Homelink mirror upgrade on 2015 model S

Sat Jan 17, 2015 10:00 pm

I have read several threads on here about mirror upgrades but I haven't found one where someone has done an upgrade on a S model. Has anyone done the upgrade? My main question is whether there is a place to get 12 volt switched power in the headliner.

Thanks in advance!

No switched power in the overhead bin, map lights or headliner, but it is an easy task to run a wire down to the fuse block on the drivers side of the dashboard. Just pull of the door gasket seal along the A pillar cover and tuck the wire back behind the door airbag, and down to the fuse block. Use an "add-a-circuit" tap to a switched fuse location. In my case, I have a '14 SV which had a dimming mirror, but I wanted to put a homelink mirror in its place. For that all I had to do was add an unswitched line to the map light circuit.

Why would you want switched power for a homelink mirror? Shouldn't it be hot all the time so you can open/close the garage door regardless if the car is on or off?

Yes, the homelink can be on an unswitched circuit, but the dimming function has a separate line, and it needs to be switched because that circuit is live all the time.

I was happy to find the Home link was on switched power on my new Mercedes B. It does not make sense to enable robbers if you park outside.

Not following why the dimming function needs to be on a switched line?

Because an electrochromic mirror switches the dimming on and off with two photosensors switches, and it's always drawing power. If it's power is not switched off when the car is off, then the mirror can drain the 12v battery.

I replaced the auto-dimming mirror in my MY 15 SV with one with homelink and a compass.

I tied everything into the switched circuit that was there for the original auto-dimming mirror because I was to lazy to run a line down to the fuse panel. The mirror instructions called for tying the line for the homelink to a constant hot line. I don't really care that the homelink only works when the car is on. It's not really an issue to me.

In staring at the ceiling in my 2011 when waking from a nap yesterday, I wondered if this was a solution (assuming there is the a similar interior light setup in the 2015 S?) - you get permanent power by tapping into the input side of the interior light switch and get switched power from the lamp side of said switch. All you then do to turn the Homelink dimming sensor switches off is remember to move the interior light switch from either of the other positions to "off". It's not ignition switched, but it's fairly elegant solution otherwise, no?

Take the feed for the entire mirror from the lamp side of the switch and your mirror is then turned off completely when the switch is moved to the off position, for those of you worried about the security issues of having the door opener feature live all the time.

Taping the front dome light/map light is what I did for the homelink mirror I installed in my '14 SV to provide unswitched power. Since the S and SV come with a auto-dimming mirror there is already a switched lead to the mirror pigtail.

If you replace the auto-dimming mirror with a Homelink auto-dimming mirror, you can feed both the auto-dim circuit and the homelink circuit with the existing switched line. If you want the homelink circuit to be alive all of the time, you can take a tap from one of the map lights to feed that. That is what I did.

Two things to consider.

No need to rig a switched power connection on the S and SV, that line is already provided to the standard auto-dim mirror.

If you upgrade from an auto-dim to a homelink/auto-dim mirror, the pigtail that connects to the mirror is different between the 2 types of mirrors. However the correct type of pigtail is readily available on eBay
