Recommended LED Low-Beam upgrade for 2013 Leaf S?

Mon Jan 02, 2017 11:37 pm

So Im looking into modifying my Leaf S with some LED headlights.

Im fairly competent with mechanics but Ive never dealt with these sort of 'bulb' before, so I am a bit hesitant.

I think this is the correct bulb (H13) for my vehicle (13 S). But They dont look to be the best quality, plus the advertised color temperature of 7200 is too blue, but would these work? Simple plug n play like other HID/ballast systems?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thx!

Those passively cooled led conversion led headlight bulbs might not be bright enough. The bigger style with cooling fans are brighter but sometimes don't fit, let water into the housing if the caps must be left off, and have a poor beam pattern due to the large area of the light source. Color temps above 5000 are too blue. I prefer 4300. The 35W HID kits from DDM tuning or similar are still the best upgrade to save energy and have the best visibility but may not work in applications where the headlights are fed a partial voltage as daytime running lights.

These are bright enough but have the above mentioned problems and are still too blue at 6000 for my tastes.

Did you have to replace the ballasts too, or simply the Bulb/Plug?

Can you post a photo of the beam shot as it shines on a wall?

Here is a pic of the beam pattern. The headlights just replace the originals. The heat sink and fan are on the back and need to have the dust cover left off for air flow.

I got these LED bulbs from amazon.

A fellow Leaf owner wrote a nice review and instruction on how to install the bulbs. I installed these bulbs in my 2016 SV and it works pretty well. The low beam is ok but the high beam is amazingly bright. And you will have to adjust the light pattern.

Once you removed the dusk cover and the light bulb, you will see that there is a gap between the reflector housing and the exterior cover, I just push the connectors into the gap and I was able to put the dust cover back on. It was not easy, but it can be done.

I live in fairly cold climate, year round weather is 40 to 70F, so far I have not have problem with heating issue by putting the dust cover back on. Also, since there is no engine, so not much heat coming from the engine/motor bay. Keep the original bulb around just in case if you burn the LED bulbs. The blue color is pretty cool.

I have a pair like the OP linked to - they are quite bright, and they are still working about a year later. You need to open up the copper braid loops into a fan, and you cannot use the stock covers on the back of the headlight housings.
