Not being argumentative; I was just providing more detail for the thread. Given the number of recommendations for checking resting voltage on this forum, I think the idea of load-testing is something that a lot of folks don't consider important. I know I didn't fully recognize the importance until one of my batteries failed. I spent a couple of weeks troubleshooting (clearing codes and looking for drains) and things weren't making sense. I finally cobbled up a load to place on the battery while I checked the voltage, and BINGO the battery would fall flat on its face; mystery solved.

In fact, reading this thread reminded me that I should really have a dedicated 12V load-test; that's how I know the price as I just got it a few days ago :)
I noticed you're still working with polymers.

Many auto parts stores will do a free load test. The question is whether or not they would do anything to harm a Leaf.

FWIW, I am 5.5 years and 56,000 miles in and still on my original 12V battery. I am the original owner. Lately, I have considered replacing it preemptively. I'd rather not get stuck.

Just check your current batteries condition. If you don't know how or have the tools, have a free check done at most auto part stores. Getting a new one doesn't guarantee whether it will last months or years. If it isn't broke, don't fix it!

If it is past its service life expectancy, however, replacement becomes a good option. Just don't replace it with a crappy battery.

I cannot see a "preemptive" battery change. A good battery, as seen by a load test, will stay that way for a long time. Regular checking (every 3-6 months) will notice deterioration with a good enough warning.

One of my favorite tools is the multimeter and the old Harbor freight battery load tester for about $20.

CHEAP TIP: With just a multimeter (most people have them already), you can first do a "cheap" load test by measuring the battery voltage (with the car off). Then turn on your headlights, and measure the battery voltage for a minute or two..... See if it drops significantly....

As has been noted before, old lead acid batteries accumulate lead sludge at the bottom of the battery. This can result in an internal short, with zero warning.

Lead flaking is a problem of overcharged battery. Undercharged batteries accumulate sulfite on the plates.

I think that lots of vibration (like from bad roads) can also cause flaking.
