Re: Shark Fin antenna cover

Tue Sep 20, 2011 1:02 pm

I received and installed my Shark Fin antenna from Visual Garage. I received the antenna within 1 week of ordering it. If you want to order one of these you will need to email them and ask for their Mark II VG and specify your Year/Make/Model along with the paint code. The Mark II Shark Fin has a higher profile than their previous antenna so it can accommodate the higher profile on the integrated Leaf satellite antenna. AM/FM reception seems to be the same as the stock antenna, although I mostly listen to XM.

Here is a photo of it installed on my Leaf:

Can someone give me a hint on how to remove the base of the current antenna. Mine got snapped off and I'll probably try to go w the Shark Fin. Shark Fin website Installation says: Remove old antenna. ????? Is is just glued on?

Thanks.

Other than Juicehybrid.com, has anyone found another web site that sells shark fin antenna replacements for a Nissan Leaf?

Visual Garage still has a message on their web site indicating that they will return July 1st, so I don't know if they went under or not.

Thanks! :)

Instead of starting a new thread I figured I'd just add on to this one.
The rod antenna on my '13S Leaf broke off a couple years ago in a car wash. Sat worked fine but FM(don't listen to AM) reception was limited to only local high powered channels. I ended up installing the correct pitch screw in the hole about 3" long that helped with reception but looks a bit hokey. Lately(due to another thread) I started researching into an aftermarket Shark Fin antenna that would simply slip over my OEM base and also provide a bit of an FM antenna. Amazon lists pages and pages of different ones, ranging from $7 to $100+. I ended up buying one that was specifically advertised for a Nissan Leaf from a company called AntennaX. It wasn't as cheap as some but not all that expensive either, $25 shipped. It looks to be well made and is glossy black, looks quite nice.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0121 ... UTF8&psc=1
Unfortunately, it does not fit :( just a tad too wide to slip over my existing base(I'd guess 5mm??). As best I could measure my existing base is:
128mm L(or 5+" for Americans)
69mm W(or 2 5/8") and this is where the Shark fin is just a tad narrow to slip over my base without possibly breaking.
38mm H(or 1 3/8")

If the one I had ordered had been just a bit wider it would have been the perfect fit, all other dimensions seemed OK. I don't really want a huge shark fin, just one a little bit bigger. Has anyone else ordered one that fit that wasn't too bulky? I'm thinking about this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071FG2BDV/_e ... L13W&psc=1
Which sounds like it might fit(just barely on the width) but might end up going with red(to match my Cyan Leaf) as the black is $8 more :x
Still, if the red is the wrong shade it might end up looking worse than just getting a black one??
Anyone have any suggestions, preferably have a specific model they know works.
Note thinking the year might make a difference(didn't think it would but what the heck) I unscrewed the rod off my '12SL and it was exactly the same size as my '13S, have no idea what Leaf the seller tried it on, if they even did.......

I ordered one of these. It just showed up, so I haven't had time to try it yet, probably tomorrow.

That looks like a real quality antenna, aluminum in construction 8-) I like how a reviewer said he purchased it to replace his phallic looking OEM antenna
Myself I'd rather do away entirely with the rod and go with the lower profile fin.
