Tips for Buying a Used EV

Sun Dec 03, 2017 3:41 pm

The popularity of leasing means that lightly used EVs are often on the market - 34% of EV sales in 2017 so far have been preowned. To help you in your search, here are five things to think about when buying used. http://bit.ly/BuyinganEV

Bonus Tip:
Driving habits and conditions affect battery life, however, losing range hasn’t been a serious problem with used EVs, many of which have hit over 100,000 miles and are still going strong. More at the link!

What are your tips for anyone out there looking to purchase a preowned EV?

This is bad information, especially in a Leaf forum. I suggest you try to limit tips to charging-related subjects.

PLEASE don't PM me with Leaf questions. Just post in the topic that seems most appropriate.

Agree with Leftiebiker. If they keep this up we will ignore them and their chargers.

Indeed.

OP should consult these:
https://web.archive.org/web/20130115102 ... p?p=228326 (even a 4 capacity bar loser when the Leaf had only been out 21 months)
viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9694 besides the monster thread at viewtopic.php?f=30&t=8802
viewtopic.php?f=30&t=23606 - already have been some 1 to 4 capacity bar losers on 30 kWh Leafs (began w/model year 2016), including some of the 4 bar losers already having their HV battery replaced under capacity warranty
Examples of 4 bar losers on 30 kwh Leafs (began w/model year 2016):
- viewtopic.php?p=502282#p502282
- viewtopic.php?p=506613#p506613
- viewtopic.php?p=510024#p510024
- viewtopic.php?p=512503#p512503
These folks have lost over 30%, possibly as much as 40% of their battery capacity.

http://www.electricvehiclewiki.com/Real ... acity_Loss - unfortunately, not updated much any more.

http://www.electricvehiclewiki.com/Batt ... y_Behavior is derived from the table in the '11 Leaf service manual.

I personally know some folks here in the Bay Area who were able to lose 4 bars within the 5 year/60K capacity warranty (viewtopic.php?t=13192) and got their HV battery replaced for free under warranty, including 1 person at my work. My work is within a few miles of Chargepoint HQ.

For those who are down 4 bars outside the the 5 year/60K capacity warranty and had the misfortune of it happening when Nissan decided to no longer help w/the replacement cost.... tough luck.
