A couple of sites are reporting teasers about a new electric car from Nissan at the Paris Auto show in two days:

Nissan has been working several years on trying to get the eNV-200 to US shores, I've all but given up they can get anything done, other than the Leaf......maybe in other markets but I really doubt anything will make it here :(

Nissan-ish news from Paris:

Renault just announced a 41 kWh ZOE. LG cells, forced-air cooling, nearly the same pack dimensions and weight as the old 22 kWh pack.

41KWh, with 85% usable (10% top, 5% bottom cut off) would leave you with 34.85KWh, which at 4.4 miles/KWh is 153.34 miles range, which is a pretty spanking good improvement. However, unless the price is significantly lower than the Chevy Bolt, I suspect demand will be slow unless there is something exceptionally compelling about it. The Bolt's range of 235 miles is an EPA rating, which the EPA gives what a 3.7 or 3.8 miles per KWh for the current Leaf? That would get you 130 miles range, EPA style.

Hey, improvements are improvements, I won't begrudge baby steps, ever forward, but Nissan may have to pick up the pace a bit if 41KWh is all they can offer.

Now, what I want to hear is this:
That they can put that 41KWh in current Leafs... Then we're talking! (Probably won't happen, but who knows, and if so, probably only for 2013+ models.)

See the links below from which the speculation seems to have originated, reposted from the corporate news thread:

Nissan's biggest announcement from the Paris Auto show is the new micra, which seems somewhat over-hyped in the title of the video below:

Nissan at Paris Motor Show 2016 - A revolution is coming

However, other reports suggest a new Nissan in the same class might be revolutionary in that it will be a BEV:

Nissan plans new electric supermini to sit under the Leaf

Nissan’s new electric small car set to follow the next Leaf and could share tech with the Renault ZOE

Nissan is weighing up its options as to how it will expand its range of pure electric vehicles, with a Ford Fiesta-sized model lined up to join the Nissan Leaf, according to a senior company source...

...he gave the strongest indication yet on what’s likely to get the green light, saying: “We’ve invested $5.4bn (£4.1bn) in electric cars such as the Leaf, so we need to ensure we’re satisfying as many types of customer as possible. In Europe, that could mean looking towards B-segment hatches [Ford Fiesta size] and SUVs or crossovers.” ...

If we look towards crossovers or the B-segment for the next car, those could make perfect sense.” Nissan has relatively straightforward options for an electric B-segment model, illustrated here in our exclusive image...

And perhaps, even offered for sale the USA?
Paris Motor Show: It's electric

...Nissan is weighing whether to sell its Micra in the U.S. after launching the subcompact hatchback in Canada in 2014. The latest-generation Micra will be bigger than the current model and gets a higher-quality interior to make it a better competitor to models such as the Ford Fiesta. It will look sportier, with a design influenced by the Sway concept unveiled at the 2015 Geneva show. Adding the Micra to Nissan's U.S. lineup may depend on how much Nissan thinks it will cannibalize its Versa sedan...

The Zoe has 40kwh useable!
To compare it to the Leaf, it has a NEDC rating of 400km, whereas the Leaf24/30 have 199/250km.
So considering the Leaf 24 is 84 miles EPA, you could say that the Zoe would be around 170 miles EPA.
Premium for that battery is 3000€ which is quite good for an extra 18kwh useable. This is exactly the extra asked for a Leaf 30 vs 24 where I live (Ireland)

I'm not sure we would find that battery on the Leaf though. But the rumours of a Micra/Juke with that Zoé battery and a range extender is pretty strong.

40 kWh usable in a Micra for less than $25,000 (before incentives) would get some attention. However, to compete with the Bolt, I still think the Leaf 2 needs to be announced for this Fall with 60 kWh (maybe 50-54 usable) for $35,000 (before incentives).

In the end, you guys know they are going to have an air cooled battery

Too bad... soo sad

Air-cooled is better than uncooled. Like my 2012 Leaf. Which, by the way, has held up reasonably well for the past 4.5 years. Better than I expected in 2012.

A sealed battery is uncooled

No TM, no cooling.... plain and simple.

Nissan screwed up once, and they will screw up again.

Since the packs never seem to get too hot while driving unless the ambient temp is very hot, it would be most accurate to say that the pack is cooled while the car is moving, in moderate temps. ;-)

So...did Nissan pull their plans at the last minute?

I mean...you can't exactly call the 41kWh Zoe "changing everything". But I suppose:

"And now...

Nissan is keeping up with progress
in the industry. Still."

Just doesn't generate quite the same amount of buzz...

Would have loved to be the fly on the wall of whatever discussions went into scrapping whatever Nissan's announcement was....

EDIT: The Micra announcement didn't say anything about an electric powertrain, did it?

I wouldn't change the existing battery pack air cooled design, and I would implore Nissan to model all future LEAF higher Energy packs to be produced in the same exact packaging volume as they currently are and have been since the LEAF's inception in 2011. Being able to switch out a battery in the LEAF, like changing the battery in your cell phone is the beauty of this ideal setup, i.e. no cooling lines to deal with, only a couple hours to change the battery pack and re-program the car. I am thinking Nissan will be able to use the existing packaging volume and just add more powerful cells to the modules. In 2012, A123 Systems already discovered new tecnology for EV batteries that would not need a (Thermal Management System) TMS, i.e. Liquid Orange Antifreeze/Glycol pumped around the Battery Modules to cool them, like the Volt, Spark and Bolt. What a headache to remove the batteries in these cars, you need to take 1/2 the car apart. What a waste, you'll never be able to upgrade the batteries and be forced to buy another $30k Electric Vehicle for greater range. The Volt, Spark and Bolt are 'disposable cars' with no options EVER, to upgrade your pack. Your stuck with the battery packs forever.

"...In addition, Nanophosphate EXT is expected to enable automakers to significantly reduce or completely eliminate active cooling systems in electric vehicle battery packs. A123 expects this to lower cost, reduce weight and improve reliability, providing automakers with a cost-effective solution that A123 believes will increases efficiency and minimize system complexity without sacrificing vehicle performance, battery life or driving range..."

I was a bit confused as well. "We're changing everything... by taking an existing vehicle and upping the battery size. Just like everybody else."

And the wait for Leaf 2.0 continues.
