You know I admire Lutz as the Energizer Bunny of the American Auto industry (now retiring at like 75 plus years old). But this survey is like saying 83% would prefer a pet unicorn to a pet griffin.

As a regular reader of pollster.com and http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/ I can tell you that I can make a survey to get whatever result that is desired.

I had the following discussion with outgoing GM vice chairman Bob Lutz about the Chevy Volt and pure EVs.
How do you see the difference in demand between the Voltec vehicle and the pure EV? You said the pure EV was your initial idea, and now Nis...

I prefer calling him "crazy uncle" or Lunatic Lutz.

For those who don't know Lutz is infamous for calling climate change "a crock of ****".

Here's the problem: Only about a small fraction of US buyers are solidly committed to buying an electric-drive vehicle of any sort. So does it really matter what the overwhelming majority who aren't committed to buying an electric drive vehicle would say? *Of course* they're going to choose the one that's most similar to a regular gasoline car. And they're not going to buy either!

Sure thing Karen, but as gasoline reaches $4, $5, $6, $8, $10 or more a gallon over the next several years, they will be begging for a way to get off their gasoline addiction. Luckily there is a plan for how to get %75 of the light duty fleet converted to electric by 2040, so they will be driving electric cars sooner than they think, at least the younger ones will :) they can oppose this as much as they want, there is really no other viable solution right now. PHEVs are just a gateway drug to "real" EV's :)

I'm sure you've seen the plan: http://www.electrificationcoalition.org/

@Karen, that is a very wise observation....until we demonstrate the practical ability of these cars to be useful in day to day use, these surveys are completely useless in predicting future purchasing behavior.

Yes, unless the early adopters are polled - we won't know the answer. Besides, who knows how this "poll" was conducted, what the questions were etc. etc.
