The bar has been raised for EV's, current record: 10:04.652 (all asphalt)

Out of 167 entries the Toyota Motorsports EV P001 driven by Fumio Nutahara came in 6th overall. The E-runner of Nobuhiro Tajima would have been faster but DNF-ed on his run. Next year the 18 second gap between the fastest ICE and the fastest EV will almost certainly grow smaller.

Hiked up to Devil's Playground hoping to see Monster set a new overall record, not just an EV record. Disappointed, but thankful that Monster was not injured. The EV was not the only specialized machine to have a problem. Only two of the "unlimited" class vehicles made it to the summit, and there was a spectacular crash that I did not witness. Again, very thankful that there were no serious injuries.

Though I live near Pikes Peak, and spend a lot of time running on the mountain, I had never watched the hill climb. It was fascinating. Lots of cool vintage cars. The funnest thing to watch were the "sidecar monkeys" as they hung off of one side inches from the pavement, and then scrambled over the top of the bike for the next turn.

The EVs were awesome to watch, and made a good showing. The ICEs were struggling to run full-out at the high altitude, but not so with the EVs. Maybe next year, Monster will set a new record!

I am going to have to make the effort to hit the bottom of the mountain with a full charge, and take the Leaf to the summit!

July 2015
Rhys Millen’s 1,368bhp EV conquers Pikes Peak
He broke the EV unlimited record by one second, but the driver said he left about 30 seconds on the course due to a complete failure of the rear drive pack (meaning half the available power) less than half way up.

He is still 53 seconds off the absolute record set in 2013:

Of course, Millen’s time is still nearly a minute shy of Sébastien Loeb’s outright PP record, the French rallyist recording a deranged 8m13.8s in 2013 in his 875bhp Peugeot 208 T16.
I like the word "deranged" in that quote. There is more to setting a world record on a dangerous course like Pike's Peak than simply horsepower!
