Thats a problem of the Delta II platform and the heavy B pillar in a compact sized car.. the low roof does not help either.

Various discussions in articles about the new DX22 platform for the Volt and other cars.
The platform - essentially a flexible set of underbody components that includes wheels, tires, brakes and suspension - carries the internal GM designation D2XX, according to the two sources familiar with the program.
Development of the D2XX platform is a critical part of GM's ongoing consolidation of its global vehicle platforms in an effort to reduce manufacturing complexity and cost. It will combine two current GM platforms - the Delta II platform, which underpins the 2012 Cruze and Volt, and the Theta platform, which is the base for the 2012 Equinox.

Yes, as a tall person I found the low roof of the Volt made it awkward to get in and out. It is something one would become accustomed to eventually I suppose. But after a long trip driving a Volt I found getting back into my comfortable, spacious, LEAF a relief.

Re: Global/worldwide sales for Volt, LEAF, and PIP

Several articles out but this seemed to be the source:

GM’s Chevy Volt Outsold Nissan Leaf Last Year, BNEF Says
By Siddharth Philip - Mar 12, 2013 10:01 AM CT
Deliveries of the Volt more than tripled to 30,090 units in 2012, the top seller among vehicles that need to be plugged in to a socket for recharging, according to yesterday’s report. It was followed by Toyota’s plug-in Prius, whose first-year sales of 27,181 units exceeded the 25,435 units of the Leaf, the leader in 2011, according to the report.

Nissan, Japan’s second-largest automaker, said this week it’s putting its electric-vehicle business under the direct supervision of the chief operating officer. While it’s fallen behind the Volt, the Leaf in January became the first car in its category to reach cumulative sales of 50,000 units.

GM is working on an electric car that has a range of as much as 200 miles as the company targets having half a million vehicles on the road by 2017 with some form of electrification, Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson said this month.

When GM goes to the new platform and the new gen-set, I'll definitely reconsider the Volt.

Very true. I test drove a Volt before getting the second Leaf and that was my biggest concern. We frequently use a Leaf for trips with three or four people - all adult-sized - and the Volt just isn't designed for that. Mind you, the Focus Electric wasn't a lot better. I test drove that with 5 people, as the dealer needed to ride along, and rode in the back for part if it so my daughter could test drive the car. We all agreed the back seat wasn't up to the comfort of the Leaf.
Red Leaf: 2012 SL, lease, acquired 21 November 2012
Blue Leaf: 2011 SL, purchase (new, was dealer demo), acquired 4 March 2013
