$4,000 should be enough to keep water warm in my house for 10 years if not more.

Would there be any merit in using a heat-pump water heater, where the heat input side of the heat pump (its cooling coils) was thermally bonded to the back-side of a solar PV array? Chilling the PV ought to boost its efficiency plus dump gobs of heat into the pump...

A roof-mounted solar water heater seems like a simpler solution that also works better.
