Re: Our solar production

Mon Nov 30, 2015 4:35 pm

October 2015 saw 1415 kWh of production. This beats the prior October production record from 2013 by over 5%. However, it falls short of PVWATTS' ridiculous prediction for October which is 21% higher still.

The peak production day last month on the 19th matched the record for October at 74.2 kWh, which previously was achieved last year on October 26, 2014.

Below are all our numbers for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 along with the PVWatts predictions for the old array (PVW42: good through June 2014) and the new array (PVW54: good starting with July 2014):

November 2015 saw 1277 kWh of production. This beats last November's production but falls a few percent short of the record set in November 2012 with the smaller array.

The peak production day last month on the 13th was a record for November at 69.3 kWh, which was a bit above last year's November record on November 11 and 15, 2014, at 67.3 kWh.

Re: Our solar production

Thu Dec 31, 2015 4:36 pm

December 2015 saw 865 kWh of production. This is an actual record for December, but it does not beat the December 2011 ADJUSTED production of 1036 kWh (when that year's 803 kWh production is multiplied by 1.29 to account for the increased array size).

The peak production day this month was on the 4th at 63.9 kWh. It was not a record for December. That was set on December 7, 2014, at 66.0 kWh.

Below are all our numbers for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 along with the PVWatts predictions for the old array (PVW42: good through June 2014) and the new array (PVW54: good starting with July 2014):

November   864    949   1041   1018   1227   1277   1154   kWh
December   820    803    612    669    812    865   1108   kWh
---------------------------------------------------------------
Totals   13986   6362  14495  14068  15888  18067  18330   kWh
Since installation, our system has produced 68.880 MWh as of the end of December 2015.

Net grid consumption since August 2011 (when PV was turned on permanently) has been 12.8 MWh. Solar production during this period was 68.1 MWh. Total consumption equals 80.9 MWh. Solar has provided 84.2% of that total.

I learned something interesting this month. It appears that the Field Array, which is currently pointed at 60 degrees elevation to optimize wintertime production, only outperforms the Roof Arrays (30 degrees elevation) when it is sunny outside. When it is cloudy, the Roof Array produces more. I believe this is due to something that drees once mentioned when he indicated that the flatter array should produce more energy on a cloudy day since it has a fuller view of the sky and therefore collects more of the diffuse sunlight which is available.

The first 20 days of December were quite sunny, and my system produced 704 of the month's 865 kWh of production, or over 81% of the total during that period. The other 161 kWh, or less than 19% were produced between the 21st and the 31st. Now let's look at panel-by-panel production:

December 1 - December 20, 2015 Production: Note that the PV modules in the Field Array harvest about 10% MORE energy during this period than their counterparts in the Roof Array.

Image

December 21 - December 31, 2015 Production: Note that the PV modules in the Field Array harvest about 8% LESS energy during this period than their counterparts in the Roof Array.

Image

Overall for the entire month of December the Field Array DID manage to harvest about 6% more electricity per microinverter than the the Roof Arrays, but the poor result in cloudy conditions *may* cause me to reduce my wintertime elevation to a value which is not quite so steep.

A cloudy, snowy December [30 inches of snow for the month — Telluride got 51 inches in just one week over Christmas; I presume that the skiers were happy] held my production to 186 kWh, down 1% from the previous year and much lower than my record in 2011. For the year, production from my 2170 watt array was 3159 kWh, down about 2% from 2014. Overall, it was a rather cloudy year here.

The 3159 kWh was 120% of my electricity usage for charging my car and running my house; it has been several years since I paid more than the $16 basic monthly service charge for electricity. My usage used to be a bit higher but since public L2 charge stations appeared here in May of 2014 I've been able to do some of my charging away from home while shopping or working at my volunteer job.

For 2015, our PV system generated 5,600 kWh and my ~7,000 miles of Leaf driving used 2,200 kWh. Looks like it is time to buy a 2nd EV!

We added more panels in 2015 (going from 4kW to 12kW), you can read about that here, if you're interested.

January 2016 ended with 1300 kWh having been produced, blowing away the January energy production record by a large margin. It beats last year's record of 1006 by 29% and the 2012 smaller-system record of 869 kWh by 16% (after multiplying that old record by 1.29). This was true even though we received the highest single-storm snowfall total on record for this location: 36 inches.

The peak production day this month was on the 18th at 69.5 kWh. The daily production record for January of 73.9 kWh was set on January 31, 2015.

Below are all our numbers for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2016 along with the PVWatts predictions for the old array (PVW42: good through June 2014) and the new array (PVW54: good starting with July 2014):

Re: Our solar production

Tue Mar 01, 2016 2:27 pm

February 2016 ended with 1192 kWh having been produced. This is only 88% of last year's record of 1361kWh and only 85% of the 2012 smaller-system record of 1085 kWh (after multiplying that old record by 1.29).

The peak production day this month was on the 28th at 78.5 kWh. The daily production record for February of 82.4 kWh was previously set on February 27, 2015.

Below are all our numbers for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 along with the PVWatts predictions for the old array (PVW42: good through June 2014) and the new array (PVW54: good starting with July 2014):

Our system has produced 71.372 MWh from installation through the end of February 2016.

Net grid consumption since August 2011 (when PV was turned on permanently) has been 14.8 MWh. Solar production during this period was 70.5 MWh. Total consumption equals 85.3 MWh. Solar has provided 83% of that total.
