I really enjoy my LEAF, but I bought it as a used car for a very reasonable amount. I wouldn't even consider a LEAF as a new car buy. Absolute no brainer to buy a Kona Electric or Niro EV instead, which are both actively cooled, longer range EVs with impressive standard features and a reasonable price tag.

Other than being a gas guzzler, I had zero complaints with our Hyundai Santa Fe and would have no hesitation buying another Hyundai. Years ago, I had a Nissan Axxess, which was a perfect family car except for the fact that it was a nightmare to work on and had a biodegradable electrical system. Nissan has made a habit of making questionable design decisions, they don't seem to learn from their mistakes.

I think Nissan is going to lose significant market share to better competitors over the next few years and I don't really feel sorry for them. It's frustrating to see a company like this squander what was a significant lead, but they just seem to be making a half hearted effort the last few years.

I do not see a Kona Electric car at my local dealership in So Cal, the best car with range & price I see is the Nissan Leaf.

Range: 151 mi | $29,990 | U.S. News Score: 7.7/10

@Sondy132001 You'll likely just need to wait a couple of months, at most. The 2019 LEAF e-Plus is farther behind in the production cycle as it hasn't been formally introduced yet. Production on the Kona Electric and Kia Niro are ramping up, but it's not clear yet which states in the US will get the rollout - other than "initial availability in California and subsequently in the ZEV-focused states in the western and northeastern regions of the U.S. market".

For sure, California will get the Kona Electric.

You shouldn't have to wait long...

No worries :) Happy Holidays!

It's looking more and more likely that we'll see the e-plus at CES: https://www.carscoops.com/2018/12/nissan-confirms-new-model-ces-likely-long-range-leaf/amp/

In BC the only real choices are the same as two years ago. Leaf or Tesla. Bolts are available in very small numbers and only at full pop. Our local dealer is allotted two a year. We don’t need a new car fir another 18 months. I’m guessing at that time it will still be Tesla and Leaf. Leaning toward the model 3 now but still love our Leaf. Great car.

Who knows how many will actually be made available at dealerships, but the Niro EV and Soul EV, both with a 64 kWh pack, are confirmed coming to Canada:

https://nissannews.com/en-US/nissan/usa/releases/nissan-at-ces-2019-see-the-invisible mentions "New vehicle introduction", but it's not clear if it's referring to a ~60 kWh Leaf or the Leaf Nismo RC or the IMx KURO concept crossover electric vehicle or something else.

It's kind of sad when you find yourself wondering if Nissan is about to proudly unveil a...toy car.

I just found this and posted the below in the Ghosn thread... Hmm... Was he going to speak? Someone else going to take his place?

Nissan's executive Munoz takes leave of absence in wake of Ghosn arrest
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nissan-munoz/nissans-executive-munoz-takes-leave-of-absence-in-wake-of-ghosn-arrest-idUSKCN1OZ02P
In a statement on Saturday, Nissan said that Munoz has taken a leave of absence “to allow him to assist the company by concentrating on special tasks arising from recent events.”

As a result, his planned appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week would be canceled, a Nissan spokesman said.

I wonder if this means he is on the run to avoid sharing a cell with Ghosn. Tar, Feathers and Torches

Someone in a Leaf FB group posted link to this that starts in 18 hours. It says for me January 8 5 pm.

Nissan Japan has just posted a picture on twitter from the Consumer Electronics Show. On one wall is the writing 'Nissan Leaf e+ world premier"

It's definitely the longer range, larger battery Leaf being announced today - in about 80 minutes.

Ooh, the anti-climax is killing me  Does anyone really care at this point? It will arrive or it won't, and it will match up reasonably well with the competition or it won't. Snore.

Has anyone got a link to the livestream in English?

This is the only one I could find, but it looks like it will be in Japanese only:

The battery pack cells are made by LG and are still passively cooled, which has been an issue in the past. However, Doi says Nissan has learned a lot in the almost decade of the LEAF and now believes that, even with the tighter pack, batteries will keep their capacity longer than ever. Nissan offers a 8 years/160,000 km (whichever occurs first) warranty on the battery

No, Nissan hasn't learned a damned thing.

IEVS:
Nissan Reveals LEAF e-Plus: 62 kWh Battery, 226-Mile Range
https://insideevs.com/nissan-reveals-leaf-e-plus-ces/

. . . There will be three trim levels: LEAF S PLUS, LEAF SV PLUS and LEAF SL PLUS.

Market launch plan:

  • Japan – January 2019
U.S. – Spring 2019 (pricing to be announced closer to on-sale date)
    Europe – Mid-2019. . . .

There is no word in the press release about thermal management system (liquid cooling in particular), which makes us think nothing changed from the current LEAF. Battery limited warranty is to be 8 years/160,000 km (whichever occurs first). . . .

According to Nissan, the LEAF e+ will be capable of charging at around 70 kW with a peak of 100 kW (probably at a certain state-of-charge window and temperatures).

The Japanese company encourages that when connected to 100 kW, the e+ will charge in a similar time as the base 40 kWh LEAF connected to the 50 kW charger, which is positive news. . . .

The e+ brings over a 36% increase in peak power from 110 kW to 160 kW (again on par with new mainstream BEV models). As the torque is also slightly higher, Nissan expects better acceleration, especially in the higher speed range – “50 mph (80 kph) to 75 mph (120 kph) is nearly 13 percent quicker”. . . .

Among changes Nissan mentions a very important upgrade to a larger and more responsive touchscreen with an updated navigation system:

  • “New for the LEAF e+ (on North American and EU models) is a larger, thin-film transistor, full-color 8-inch display, with an updated navigation system that can be linked to a compatible smartphone. The display features smartphone-like operation including swiping, scrolling and tapping. Applications, maps and firmware are updated over the air with the simple touch of a button, instead of having to manually update by USB or at a Nissan dealership.
    *5
Other new features include Door-to-Door Navigation, which syncs the vehicle’s navigation system with your compatible smartphone for seamless driving and walking directions. The Connections feature allows any of the car’s passengers to quickly and easily connect to a device within the vehicle.*6

5 The new navigation system for the European market can also have its software and maps updated via Inter vehicle communication (IVC) systems.

6 These new features are available on North America and EU models only. . . .”
If there really isn't a TMS, IMO it's DOA here unless they can undercut the competition on price by several thousand.
