Sitting Idle...

Mon Feb 26, 2018 7:22 am

I have a business trip coming up next week. The airport is about 85 miles from where I live and the trip is for 5 days. My concern...how much of the battery will drain while it sits idle for that 1 week span? There are chargers I can get to within 10-12 miles of where I normally park at the airport, but am I going to be in a position where the expected 135 miles of range (winter in Colorado) won't quite cut it after sitting for 5 days? Any assistance would be appreciated.

None...but that still won't get you home from a 160+ mile RT in the cold.
Your profile doesn't provide an vehicle/location info, but my airport includes "free" charging if you valet. YMMV (literally).

Sorry about that. It's a 2018 Leaf SV. I am assuming that during the winter it would be no more than 130 Miles during the winter. The Airport does have a valet service at one of the lots, but I have never used that service. I may this time. There is also a fast charger about 12 miles from the typical lot I park at. So it would be around 40-50 miles left when I park it. Then I would assume there would be some loss from just sitting idle for a week. Then 10-12 miles to the charger. I would be looking at doing a fast charge for 30-40 min then head home. Get home with just about 20 miles left on the battery. Or is that cutting things too close?

I want to be clear about this since you're a new Leafer: there will be no capacity loss while sitting idle @airport.

The rest of your plan sounds fine, although I doubt you'll need to spend anywhere near a half-hour at the QC to get home. Also, remember that you can always extend your range by lowering your speed (I generally keep it under 60 mph on the highway...especially in the cold).

That's actually really great news to hear. Makes me feel better about the purchase. Thanks!

I think the OP was asking about loss of charge, not capacity. That should be minimal.

I often park for up to 3 weeks at a time at my office or the airport and see basically no loss of stored energy (no change in state of charge). If it is really cold, the traction battery heater might use a small amount of power (should not be enough to worry about range to the DCQC station nearby).

From what I remember reading somewhere, the battery heater is 300 watts so not insignificant draw. It is only used in very cold conditions though. Below -4 according to my manual.

Edit: -4 Fahrenheit

They seem to have changed that for the 30kwh packs. The 24kwh packs start the battery warmer when the pack temp is in the mid to upper single digits Fahrenheit. It only becomes a serious drain when it has to run for most or all of the day.
