Hello - newbie here. 2013 Leaf.

Tue Jun 06, 2017 11:07 am

Hi All -

Just started looking at used Nissan Leaf's. I currently drive a 2002 Chevy Avalanche with 177k miles and fuel is killing me. Found a nice little 2013 Leaf (S?) I'm interested in. Has cloth seats, doesn't look like any Nav, and does have the quick charger. I was wondering if you had any tips for me when I go to look at it.

The VIN is 1N4AZ0CP8DC415063 for those that might be able to check the VIN for me, looking forward to being a member here.

Thanks!!

I can't find it right now, so I'll look later when I have more time, but there is a long post on these forums where I provided a bunch of photos and advice to a guy who was shopping for a used Leaf.

In the meantime, provide your location, budget, commute details, etc for better advice.

Hi - Thanks for the reply.

I'm in central NJ, The car is $7995 and I have a 30 mile round trip commute to work, at night sometimes I'll run 10-20 miles of errands.
Love the thought of an electric car, hate the thought of battery replacement.

Lots of good info here:

This one too:

Range Test:

To avoid buying a BMS reset Leaf, arrange for an extended test drive. Reset the trip counter before you start, then drive (ideally, in fairly flat terrain & nice weather) until LeafSpy tells you that the SOC has dropped by 25% (or just monitor the dash % battery display). Multiply the trip counter reading by 4 to get an estimate of total range. If it's not around 80 miles, yet the SOH is over 90%, then be suspicious.

Given your location, an SV would be a better car for you. As it is, the S would use large amounts of power for heat for three out of four seasons. An SV would only use large amounts for about 3 months a year, if that, because it has a heat pump. Look for one with no options, and the price should be only slightly higher than the S with Charge Package. White ones are common and less desirable (aesthetically - they are actually MORE desirable for Summer driving) and so should be cheaper.

I just talked the seller and the car only has 10 bars/70 miles on a ~28k mile car. I think I'm going to pass on this one.

That is almost certainly an early build 2013. Avoid any 2013 Leaf built before April of 2013 (April is fine) unless it qualifies for a free battery replacement. They used the old, fast-degrading chemistry before April.

BTW, unlike most cars, I consider the mileage on the odo to be largely irrelevant. With an EV, it's all about the condition of the battery. I purposely looked for a higher mileage vehicle, as I knew that would dissuade a lot of EV newbies. I was lucky to find one in Seattle with a very healthy battery, even though it had 46K miles on it. Got it cheap as a result.
