Forgive me for asking this newbie question. I tried searching but did not find an answer. We would like to buy a 2017 Leaf...it's my understanding that each auto manufacture has X amount of cars that will get the 7500 tax credit. Is there a way to determine before I buy if the tax credit will apply? Thanks

The current credit system allows each Manufacture 200,000 cars before it begins being reduced. Nissan is just over half way there and, assuming the 2018s increase sales a little bit, will probably hit the limit in 2020 / 2021. Also, make sure you will have at least $7,500 in Taxes, the credit only counts for the year you buy the car, any unused portion doesn't carry over.

jhm, you have no idea how helpful that was. Thank you very much....Our local dealer is offering huge savings on a 2017 SV...will keep everyone posted.

Thanks

The way the phaseout works is near the bottom of http://fueleconomy.gov/feg/taxevb.shtml. Also, the 200,000 per automaker cited is for vehicles sold/leased in the US only. EVs/PHEVs sold outside the US don't count towards that 200K.

OP, hope you're aware the next gen Leaf is set to be unveiled Sept 5th of this year (https://www.engadget.com/2017/07/01/next-gen-nissan-leaf-launches-september-5-new-photo-teased/). We do anticipate more range, amongst other things.
