I called Nissan leaf HQ to ask if my used Nissan leaf battery had been replaced by previous owners, just to get an idea of the cars history.

He stated he had good news and better news. Good news being no it hadn't been replaced. Better news was it had an open coupon for a free battery replacement. He said a select few Leafs that were sold in hot climates got this coupon for a battery replacement.
I called my local dealer like he advised me, they knew nothing about it. They said because my battery is at 75% SOH they wouldn't even look up my case number that Nissan HQ gave me.

Campaign PC496
Customer Satisfaction Initiative
Battery Replacement Certificate
24kw batteries previously replaced(he said in my case it applies even though it wasn't replaced) eligable owners up until dec 2021.
Battery is new chem that withstands heat better.

I asked him what makes you eligible as my mileage is 67k, he said my VIN makes me eligible and that is all that they require. I wasn't sure if it was the same 5year/60k warranty or not. He assured me it was separate. It sounds too good to be true but i hope this forum can help me with this since the dealer has not.

He told me to tell the dealer to look up the case number, he also said its campaign PC496 and to open "SERVICE COM" and do a VIN lookup which will show the same information. He said Nissan HQ has final say and they said its eligible so obviously I want a free battery but i cannot get my local dealer to even acknowledge the information i got.

So i ask, has any one heard of this? Am i misunderstanding the typical warranty? Does any one have access to service com to look my vehicle up?

Case #27786132

I hope some one can help me with this. Thanks in advance.

Guess Nissan has very little in the way of customer satisfaction requirements of their dealers? I'd think another call to Nissan corporate should result in a change of heart by the dealer.

If not, I'm reminded of an experience my brother had with his Tesla sitting in the repair shop for months waiting for parts. An inquiry to the Calif. Dept of Consumer Affairs (I think that is the one he said regulates dealer repair shops) and the repairs finally got started and completed promptly once their inspector showed up to inquire why they couldn't fix the car. Part of being a dealer is that you effectively get a monopoly on xx product in a local market. But along with that comes some accountability for actually servicing customers with xx product. Some just need a little reminding of their obligations.

Of course, if you are in Bakersfield, it looks like your dealer may be the only option within driving range of your used 24kwh Leaf. So,
1) they truly do have a monopoly on servicing your Leaf;
2) you might need that dealer to be in a good mood towards you as they have ways to make you suffer when they have your car if they are so inclined;
3) you might want to pick your battles...

Battery capacity is measured in kWh, not kw.

This sounds like the "hot battery" coupon that was referred to years ago. The "hot battery" that was in testing presumably is one and the same as the "lizard" battery that first became equipped on 2015 Leafs (search http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?t=17168 for lizard).

Here are example references to it (by searching MNL for hot battery coupon). Search for coupon.

This is not a complete list. I don't have time to go thru all the hits and pick out the best ones, although the 2nd points to 2 articles w/basically the same info on the coupon.

I guess Nissan made good on their offer, finally?

I don't think that this is a complicated issue, as the dealer is motivated to do any work that Nissan is willing to pay for - $$$.

Yes, the dealer can tell you to take a walk on a repair that is not covered under warrantee, because they do not want to eat that cost if Nissan does not pay.

I had a situation with my Leaf, where Nissan was willing to pay for the part, and Nissan called my dealer to confirm this. So if you can get a Leaf specialist Nissan employee to call the dealer, and OK the repair, then you have no more resistance from the dealer.....

My pack is not severely degraded like other people's so it's not a pressing issue. But if some one wants to give me a free battery I'm going to take It! Lol. I just was worried that the rep misunderstood and was telling me about the 5 year 60k warranty. I'm going to look into it with this dealer or the next. I mean if I get s 5.5k battery for free it would be worth traveling to Visalia (which I think I might be able to make with 2 quick charges.) And seeing if I get any more help there. I'm going to take a look at those links and see if any thing looks familiar. I tried to search this forum for something similar and the terms battery coupon were used ALOT! Lol. I was just hoping some one had insight to this but I will keep you posted on my progress. Let's hope it's cut and dry like the rep said.

Hot damn! Keep us informed. I sure hope that I qualify. I'm at 9 bars now and expect to lose my 4th bar next summer. I was hoping that Nissan might make some kind of exception for us low mileage drivers (I'm still under 40,000 mi). I "was" hoping for a 30-40 KWh replacement battery in 2019-2020 for $2000, but hey I'd take a free 24 KWh replacement in 2018.

Geez. I'm very fortunate my car has only lost 2 bars. Although according to leafspy I'm on my way to losing my third. But for 67k miles that's alot better then most the people on the forum.

Just got turned down for a possible subsidized battery replacement (2011 Leaf with about 33,000 miles, and eight bars), because the previous owner opted out of the class action back when he owned the car. Found this out after paying for the mandatory " battery check" at the dealer. So if you have thoughts about going for this with a car that has had a previous owner, ask Nissan to check for that before going to the dealer for that check, it might save you time, money, and disappointment. Well, maybe not disappointment...

It would make no sense for Nissan to take out a "still good" battery and give you a new one just because someone said you had a "ticket" for one.. I think that the free money/ battery lottery bug has bitten you....

Fortunately that some one is Nissan themselves so if they are willing to do it im willing to take it. As for it still being good Im at 10 bars close to losing another one, thats hardly a good battery. We will just have to see how it plays out.

Given what you heard from Nissan corporate, it's certainly worth a try! Our 2011 LEAF recently dropped to 9 capacity bars, so if this works out for you, I'll definitely be contacting our local dealer. While we live in a relatively cool mountain climate, the valley below us where we bought the LEAF gets quite hot, and using our LEAF down there was a big factor in losing the first two capacity bars.

In any case, it shouldn't matter where in the US the car was sold. People move around. The fact is that Nissan sold us lousy batteries. If they can make it right by replacing degraded batteries like ours, that'd be appreciated. That'd allow us to get more use out of our LEAF, for sure.

For the last few months my battery has sat at 100 degrees plus, even at night. I wonder how soon i will see degradation from this hot summer. Its not uncommon for it to be at 115 degrees while driving.

I've been lurking on here off and on again for a while and I still don't understand the whole battery replacement thing. I've come close to picking up two used Leafs in two separate instances. One was already down to 9 bars and when I called Nissan, they said it would be replaced with no questions asked. However, everyone on here said that was bull and that it wouldn't happen, even though Nissan themselves told me. The second one I looked at was newer and had no issues, but I opted to pass due to this apparent ongoing issue. It's not worth it to buy a $6000 car with a bad battery and then have to turn around and drop another six grand in it right away for a new battery (depending on what the price is of the car you are looking at).

I'm going to keep sitting on the EV fence to see how the tech evolves and how the various companies out there handle this. The new Leaf looks pretty good from what I saw, but I would definitely wait a year or two to see what issues crop op. I'm also looking at the Bolt and i3, but I'm also being patient on those.

Could this have been one of those situations where the first replacement was done before the new chem was available? I recall talk of those folks getting "coupons" for the lizard battery.

I pointed to the coupons at http://www.mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?p=499828#p499828.

Yeah, that was brought up and discussed at the meeting in Phoenix that I attended some years ago. However, it never actually happened.

That's exactly what It sounded like. Except my battery was never replaced, but it was as though that vehicle was promised the new chem and that's why it's open to this replacement now.

I still must lose bars before I get it replaced though. Not sure when that will happen. Leafspy is saying 48ah, 74%soh. Although it only charged to about 45ah.. I never understood that.
