Kelley Blue Book and LEAFs

Fri Nov 24, 2017 8:34 am

What's everyone impression when it comes to the accuracy of KBB and LEAFs? Do you think they are using the same criteria for their estimates that they use for ICE cars?

I presume auction prices set the base price;
Dealer retail is $2-3k more
And private sale is in the middle
2013 Model 'S' with QC & rear-view camera
Bought off-lease Jan 2017 from N. California with 63.9 Ahr after 22k miles
Car is now enjoying an easy life in Colorado

I didn't bother with them. To me, about all they're useful for when it comes to Leaf is to let a dealer justify their mark up over auction prices.

The used car dealer I bought from in July 2015 had a $1K mark up above his cost. He'd get them from Manheim (http://press.manheim.com/2010-07-27-Man ... into-sales) auctions. viewtopic.php?p=509373#p509373 has pointers to my buying saga.

Nissan franchise dealers have big markups.

According to KBB my car is worth more than what I paid for it one year ago!
2013 SL 50,000 miles.
12 bars until 44,300 miles on June 2, 2017. :D
11 bars current. :)

I guess you could try to cross reference with Craigslist and other ads in your area...

Sometime I hear on the net "Edmunds/KBB says ____". Response: "Edmunds/KBB isn't buying your car" or "sell to Edmunds/KBB then".

Thanks everyone. The reason I ask is someone local is quoting me KBB price on a 2011 (SL with QC and regen braking) that only has 6 bars/40 mile range left. He says that it's in great shape otherwise and I believe him, but I feel as though KBB can't take remaining battery life into consideration, and therefore their numbers aren't applicable since there's a $5500 bill coming up for that car.

You are correct. The KBB price would only apply if the car had 11 or more capacity bars left. A rough comparison would be a mint-looking ICE with low compression in the engine.

The most offensive, tasteless phrase in use here is "Pulled the trigger." I no longer respond to posts that use it.

As I posted elsewhere, a year ago, this guy in a remote (to me) part of CA couldn't sell his '11 that was down to 8 bars (pretty sure of this) for $4500:

EPA range rating on '11 and '12 Leaf was 73 miles on a new battery.

Not sure what you mean by "regen breaking" but with only 6 bars I'd say it would basically have NONE. My '12 with 9 bars hardly has any regen, even at a lower SOC I'm lucky to get 3 bubbles, compared to my 11 bar '13 , the '12 hardly feels like it has regen, a 6 bar car will have much less.
If your really interested I'd probably try and figure out how much a new battery would go for(I'd guess $5-6k??) in which case his 6 bar '11 probably wouldn't be worth much more than a couple thousand, IMO it's basically scrap price.
