LEAF "wave"

Wed May 09, 2018 8:55 am

I know there are some other threads on this topic, but they are several years old.

Now that LEAFs are becoming more prevalent, is there a LEAF wave? Kinda like a motorcycle wave, or a Jeep wave? You know, some sort of acknowledgment that the other LEAF owner might possibly be as awesome as you because they were intelligent enough to purchase such an amazing vehicle? I tried to get one going with my Honda Odyssey mini-van a while ago, but it didn't catch on. Haha.

Some Leaf drivers wave, but I don't think it's standardized. I've seen, and given, what we might call a Porsche-style wave (a hand partially raised from the steering wheel) and a flashers' wave (blinks of the high beams by pulling on the turn-signal stalk twice).

If we're going to standardize, I suggest the two flashes of the headlights, since they're electrical.

I've also waved at a few Teslas, which I see more often than Leafs, but they don't wave back.

Flashing the headlight can already mean "Your headlights are off!" or "Radar trap ahead!" or "Lower your high beams, please!"

I noticed you're still working with polymers.

What a coincidence. Plenty of LEAFs around here and rarely any kind of "wave", but just yesterday there was a LEAF driver waiting to pull out at the end of our street, as I was making the turn in, so there was a friendly wave.

The best "wave" car I've had was the original Miata with pop-up headlights. You could even wire them to raise separately, for the true Miata Wave :)

If you are in the Orange County, CA area Garygid hosts bye monthly meetings. They started out Leaf only but over the years many upgraded their cars. Gary now drives a Tesla S,

This is kind of dated, but I'd always assumed that the official LEAF gesture was the Vulcan "Live long and prosper" salute that Leonard Nimoy popularized, simultaneously conveying greetings, recognition, and good wishes for the other driver's battery to give good service.
