Car not charged overnight if using charge timer

Tue Sep 25, 2018 2:31 am

Hi! I just got second hand Leaf S '14 from U.S. (I live in Latvia, N. Europe). Using it as daily driver.

Problem: if I set charge (end) timer, it acknowledges the time but never starts charging.

If the charge end time is less than time required to charge it, it works - starts charging right away. If it has to wait few hours (e.g. I set at 9 PM and want it to be ready at 7 AM), it just fails silently.

It does show 3 sequentially blinking lights when I plug it. It also does beep 3 times. But it never charges :(

I scanned over some topics on forum, but failed to find similar case. Please, forgive me if I've overlooked it.

If it is a system failure, any workarounds?
  • carwings/nissan-ev-connect won't be available on my S-trim, AFAIK
  • my EVSE (Ecubar?) does not have timer built in
  • ...?

Thank you in advance!

Hello, Kamazs. I have a 2017 S, and the timer works, mostly. I don't recall seeing anyone post a problem like yours on this forum.

When you go out in the morning, are the dashboard LEDs still blinking the 3-LED pattern?

Note that the clock used for charging is on the dashboard by the steering wheel. The time shown on the radio/backup camera screen is not used by the charging timer.

Thanks for reply! Good to hear this is uncommon, hopefully its just some silly mistake on my part.

No, they stop blinking approx. 10 minutes after I've plugged in and in the morning they are still off.

Please post the details of how you have setup the timers, as perhaps you've overlooked something. Photos of the settings would be ideal...

I have found that the dash timer is worthless...

Image
Switch on the car

Image
Open menu

Image
Select *Charging timer* section

Image
View current status

Image
Image
Start setup: switch it on

Image
Image
Set time

Image
Verify that it's set succesfully

Image
When switching sure, dashboard briefly lights up timer status once again confirming that it is set

Image
Switch off car, open lid.

Then connect the EVSE. Lights start the sequential "dance", in few minutes they switch off and, as far as I can tell, they don't come up again themselves. And car is not starting to charge at any moment.

I don't think this timer sets time of the day, I think this is period (that is, to charge within 7 hrs, in your case, but then it should start charging? Anyway, I've never used this one).

The scheduling day times are set from the Zero Emission menu on the touch screen. Set only end times, not start times.

The three blinking lights on the dash should keep blinking until the car starts to charge.

(EDIT...I AM INCORRECT, THE LIGHTS TURN-OFF AFTER A FEW MINUTES)

You might try scheduling a timed charge, then wiggling the J1772 plug, and see if the lights turn off. Or power the EVSE from a different circuit, or from a computer surge protector. Or try a different EVSE altogether. Are there any public L2 chargers in Latvia? If so, you could visit one: schedule the charger to start much later, and then wait to see if the lights go out after a few minutes, or if they blink for an hour or more.

One note on the timed charge: my Leaf S usually finishes charging 1 to 2 hours before the programmed "stop time." And even then, the last 1-2 hours of charging is spent "balancing the pack" (getting it from 98% to 100%). If you are testing the timer, and want the car to wait 1 hour before charging, you may be surprised to find that the car actually starts charging 4 hours before you expect it to start.

Thanks for detailed advice!

I had the impression lights have to go out - this is key piece of information.

We have 220V grid everywhere at home, so, yes, I can find some spot. Though, I think I already tried at least one other socket.

Will see about that connection now that I know lights should blink.

No, the lights do not blink all the time until charging, only a few minutes after plugging-in with the timer on. Then they completely go off, until charging starts, when they light up steadily showing the charge level. Again, this is with the day schedule timer, not the one shown in the pictures, and no set start time. Don't know if setup is different.
