Magna's expanding BEV/HEV/PHEV portfolio as listed below is impressive.

And its manufacturing of Jaguar's I-pace wasn't even mentioned.

The announcement below suggests it may now want to do for a high-end BEV manufacturer, what LG did for the GM bolt...

Magna to Showcase EtelligentDrive Systems at CES 2018

With the global trend towards electrification in the automotive industry, automotive supplier Magna will present its EtelligentDrive systems at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, Nev.

The company’s e1 demonstration concept vehicle will be used to demonstrate different electric-drive (e-drive) concepts and systems, as well as demonstrate Magna’s vehicle integration capabilities. The e1 system consists of one highly integrated e-drive system on the front axle and one on the rear axle with two electric motors (e-motors).

With this innovative approach, the demo car achieves superior longitudinal and lateral dynamics combined with excellent vehicle stability for more safety. Each e-drive system in the demo vehicle uses 140-kilowatt motors, adding up to an overall performance of 420-kilowatt peak. The e-motors are combined with a single-speed reduction-gear transmission and an inverter into a very compact package...

Magna’s electrified powertrain capabilities include key components for modern e-drive systems: e-motor, gearbox, inverter and control software that can be easily integrated into vehicles. The solutions range from products for 48-volt mild hybrids to highly integrated e-drive systems for battery electric vehicles. Electrified auxiliaries like thermal management modules, electric water pumps or electric oil pumps complete the portfolio. For nearly 10 years, Magna has been supporting customers in the U.S. and Europe from concept to production with products for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

In 2009, the company announced a vehicle-development partnership with Ford Motor Company to introduce a zero-emission lithium-ion battery electric vehicle (BEV) – this became the Ford Focus BEV, which entered the market in 2011 and is still produced today. Magna is responsible for providing the e-motor, electronic control module / inverter and the transmission for this vehicle.

Additionally since 2012 Magna has supplied Volvo with the electrified rear axle drive system (eRAD) featured on the Volvo V60 and S60 plug-in hybrid models. Magna’s eRAD system offers multiple hybrid driving modes while also adding electric all-wheel-drive capability.

More recently, the company announced a Joint Venture partnership with Hasco in China to produce a high volume e-drive system for a German automaker.

The Bolt is pretty much an LG made car, I think the body and a few other parts are GM and little else.

IIRC the Magnus supplied Ford Focus gives Nissan a run for its money for the all time worse battery longevity.
So perhaps it makes sense that these two companies would partner.

That, or Nissan is just trying to play LG off other suppliers for best pricing.
I expect Nissan to choose the cheap and crappy solution.

Autoweek has a report:

CES 2018: Here's the car and truck tech coming to Vegas this year

CES promises to be the usual mix of crazy concepts and real-world technology ideas

The new year has arrived, and with it comes the migration of tens of thousands of tech engineers, executives, analysts, media and other industry watchers to Las Vegas for the largest tech trade show of the year — CES. The show runs from Jan. 9 to 12.

While auto shows are the primary platform for manufacturers to show off their latest vehicles and detail short-term product plans, CES has become the forum for bombastic announcements on future technology.

In 2017, we saw Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Portal minivan concept and Toyota Motor Co.'s artificial intelligent assistant Yui, along with a string of announcements of partnerships between tech and auto companies.

This year, Ford, Nvidia, Intel and Baidu are expected to make announcements at the show, though the companies have been tight-lipped about their plans...

Nissan appears to be serious about this...

Nissan Brain-to-Vehicle technology redefines future of driving

Latest breakthrough in Nissan Intelligent Mobility promises
cars that learn from driver

Nissan unveiled research today that will enable vehicles to interpret signals from the driver’s brain, redefining how people interact with their cars.

The company’s Brain-to-Vehicle, or B2V, technology promises to speed up reaction times for drivers and will lead to cars that keep adapting to make driving more enjoyable.

Nissan will demonstrate capabilities of this exclusive technology at the CES 2018 trade show in Las Vegas. B2V is the latest development in Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision for transforming how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society.

“When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines. Yet B2V technology does the opposite, by using signals from their own brain to make the drive even more exciting and enjoyable,” said Nissan Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci. “Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility, we are moving people to a better world by delivering more autonomy, more electrification and more connectivity.”

This breakthrough from Nissan is the result of research into using brain decoding technology to predict a driver’s actions and detect discomfort:

Predict: By catching signs that the driver’s brain is about to initiate a movement – such as turning the steering wheel or pushing the accelerator pedal – driver assist technologies can begin the action more quickly. This can improve reaction times and enhance manual driving.

Detect: By detecting and evaluating driver discomfort, artificial intelligence can change the driving configuration or driving style when in autonomous mode.

Other possible uses include adjusting the vehicle’s internal environment, said Dr. Lucian Gheorghe, senior innovation researcher at the Nissan Research Center in Japan, who’s leading the B2V research. For example, the technology can use augmented reality to adjust what the driver sees and create a more relaxing environment.

“The potential applications of the technology are incredible,” Gheorghe said. “This research will be a catalyst for more Nissan innovation inside our vehicles in the years to come.”

Nissan’s B2V technology is the world’s first system of its kind. The driver wears a device that measures brain wave activity, which is then analyzed by autonomous systems. By anticipating intended movement, the systems can take actions – such as turning the steering wheel or slowing the car – 0.2 to 0.5 seconds faster than the driver, while remaining largely imperceptible.

Nissan will use a driving simulator to demonstrate some elements of the technology at CES, and Gheorghe will be on hand to answer questions. Nissan’s display will be at booth 5431 in the Las Vegas Convention Center’s North Hall.
