Let's discuss the various players making li-ion batteries for EVs, PHEVs, hybrids, FCEVs, etc.

One name that caught my attention last night was Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL). I'd not heard of it until a mention on Bloomberg TV last night.

China battery maker CATL closes limit-up on stock market debut

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Shares in China’s biggest lithium battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) (300750.SZ) soared 44 percent on their debut in Shenzhen on Monday, helped by investors seeking to benefit from a government policy to embrace clean energy.

CATL, based in southeast China’s Fujian province, sold 217 million new shares, or 10 percent of its enlarged capital, at an initial price of 25.14 yuan ($3.92) each.

The shares closed at 33.20 yuan, having risen by the maximum allowed for newly listed stocks on their first day of trade, giving the company a market capitalization of $12.3 billion...
http://www.catlbattery.com/en/web/index.php/about/status claims they've shipped 11.84 GWh in 2017.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-11/biggest-electric-vehicle-battery-maker-soars-on-trading-debut says
CATL, which also supplies Nissan Motor Co., Hyundai Motor Co. and BMW AG, last year overtook Panasonic as the world’s largest supplier of EV batteries by sales thanks to increasing domestic demand.
Some Googling also turned up articles like these on CATL:
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/04/07/battery-giant-catl-given-go-ahead-by-chinas-authorities-for-2-billion-ipo/

The graph at https://electrek.co/2018/02/05/catl-china-battery-producer-ipo/ is a bit odd.

BYD has gotten some attention since Warren Buffett has invested in them and they get mentioned at times on places like CNBC and various EV sites since they also sell EVs (including electric buses) and PHEVs, mostly in China.

Seems like in the US press, I only tend to hear about Tesla/Panasonic, LG Chem and Samsung SDI. AESC pretty much doesn't get mentioned except by Nissan and those who follow Nissan. I wasn't aware of Guoxuan High-Tech, Microvast nor Optimum Battery. Tianjin Lishen is certainly not a household name but sounded familiar. Apparently, they were the supplier to defunct Coda.

BYD Opens What It Claims Will Be World’s Largest Battery Factory
https://insideevs.com/byd-opens-what-it-claims-to-be-worlds-largest-battery-factory/

BYD just opened its third lithium-ion battery factory in China, which by 2020 will be world’s largest battery plant.

The new facility in lithium-rich Western China’s Qinghai province is ready to produce 24 GWh and step-by-step will be expanded to reach 60 GWh annually in 2020. The investment apparently already exceeds 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion).

According to BYD, the factory in Qinghai will be largest in the world after its construction is completed in 2019 (equivalent to the size of 140 football fields).

Looks like AESC sale failed and LG-chem will make cells for the next LEAF packs. Unclear what this means for Smyrna, TN battery plant.

https://electrek.co/2018/07/09/nissan-battery-cell-fails-leaf-lg-batteries/
At some point in 2014, AESC, which is also partly owned by NEC, became one of the largest electric vehicle battery manufacturers, second only to Panasonic, Tesla’s battery cell supplier. The joint-venture has since lost market share and Nissan has been quite open about looking to partner with someone else for future EV programs

The LG Chem news has always been a rumor (coming from Push EVs). AFAIK, Nissan's never confirmed it, so far. I have no idea how reputable Push EVs is, but their rumor has been echoed for months.

But yes, I posted about the AESC and GSR Capital deal falling thru a week ago: http://mynissanleaf.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19842&p=531464&hilit=aesc#p531464.

Toyota and Panasonic to establish joint venture specializing in automotive batteries: prismatic Li-ion, solid-state and next-gen
https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200203-primeplanet.html

This decision comes just over a year since the two companies that they had concluded a business integration contract and a joint-venture contract toward the establishment of a new company. . . .

The joint venture announced by Toyota and Panasonic will develop highly competitive, cost-effective batteries that are safe and feature excellent quality and performance (in terms of capacity, output, durability, etc.).

Furthermore, the joint venture will supply batteries not only to Toyota but also, broadly and stably, to all customers.

The partners expect employment of approximately 5,100, including 2,400 at a subsidiary in China.

VW held their "Power Day" on Monday to discuss their huge plans to expand cell manufacturing.

Also saw a report that NorthVolt of Sweden got a $14B contract to supply batteries to VW.

Saw Matt Miller's interview of Herbert Diess, head of VW, on Bloomberg Markets: Euro Closing 3/16/21 begins at 34:22 of the full show video. Discussion of fast charging, and EV production, cells, etc.

Interesting comment by Diess:
You know actually, EVs have won the race...
All competitors are basically following us...
So we feel confident.
