From the SAE website:

"For the 2013MY Leaf, Nissan integrated the motor, inverter, and charging unit into a single stack under the hood, freeing up space and reducing mass."

Reading that article I couldn't help thinking about the ip/patents Nissan must be racking up. Between Nissan and tesla other manufacturers should be concerned. For some reason I doubt they are though.

The page has changed slightly to include 4 pics instead of the original 1.

See http://articles.sae.org/11993/ vs. the an old snapshot at http://web.archive.org/web/20131203080858/http://articles.sae.org/11993/.

Interesting motor sims of the Leaf show efficiency rising up to 100nm. So maybe you can be too light on the accel pedal after 1000 rpm.

This motor features a nice three element interior permanent magnet motor showing very clean flux lines with minimal wasted heat in eddy currents.
